Having managed during his eventful time as a vicar to become a footnote in ecclesiastical history (!), John Pritchard's current role as a 'jobbing bishop' ensures he is in contact with many parish priests every week. In this lively and hopeful volume, he realistically maps out the life and work of those called to serve God in the pastoral ministry, looking in turn at the only three things he believes need be of concern: the glory of God, the pain of the world, and the renewal of the Church. From those flow the priest's many roles, such as spiritual explorer, multi-lingual interpreter, wounded companion, friendly irritant, creative leader and mature risk-taker.

Vita Communis - 'the common life' - is the term used for community life among priests and other clerics, as opposed to monks and friars. While monasticism is familiar, few are aware that pastoral ('secular') priests have lived in communities for most of the Church's history. Many people have suggested that they could do so again, and that this might help with some of the problems facing solitary priests in the modern world. By exploring what was done in the past, we can suggest what might work in the future, learning from the successes as well as the failures of previous priestly communities. The story of secular canons in the Western Church, as opposed to those who were canons in religious orders, has often been told in terms of their contribution to architecture, literature, and the apostolate. Here, however, the author, building on his earlier work devoted to the medieval rules governing the secular common life, has provided a narrative of the essential shape of the canonical life from its origins down to the present time, and this for a general readership. He thus demonstrates the persistent desire of many secular clergy to live in community. At a time when priests are fewer and more isolated, this work will provide useful models for developing structures of mutual support for the secular clergy of our time. Abbot Geoffrey Scott

"Fourteen excellent conferences he addresses to the secular clergy. When treating of such topics as the priest's spiritual exercises and his recreations, the author is particularly good. There are other chapters on poverty, chastity and obedience, and the sacerdotal state's dignity and on pastoral works." -America "We recommend to the clergy this excellent retreat manual....While addressed directly to the English clergy, it presents the ideals of the priesthood common to all times and countries. The Bishop writes very sensibly and piously of the priest's pastoral work, his recreations, his religious exercises, his annual retreat, and his practice of the evangelical counsels. Most of our spiritual books are written and most of our retreats are given by Regulars, who at times do not understand the special needs of the secular clergy. Bishop Ward knows them thoroughly, both as bishop and in the many years spent in training seminarians. Like Cardinal Manning, he upholds strongly the great dignity of the priestly vocation, and urges secular priests to counteract by their lives and works the old traditional prejudice in favor of the Regulars." -Catholic World "To the clergy and to seminarians who frequently ask for good reading on the priestly life, we heartily recommend this addition tot he already favorably known Westminster Library. Its author is the Roman Catholic bishop of Brentwood, England, and its general scope and purpose similar to Cardinal Manning's 'Eternal Priesthood.' There is little i the book to which the most stalwart Anglican could object, and very much from which he might profit. Bishop Ward points out that as many books on the priesthood have been written by Religious, much of the treatment is not applicable to the life and ideals of the secular priest. 'From the nature of the case it happens that the great number of our spiritual books are written by the Regular Clergy. Yet in some of its phases the religious life differs essentially from that of a secular priest.' Hence, the bishop takes up the actual life of the secular priest, under concrete conditions, in vocation, ideals, devotions, work, recreation, etc. For meditations and "Lent reading,' we hope this volume will find many users." -Anglican Theological Review "There is no chapter of the fourteen from which the priest in the different circumstances of the English Church will not gain something; there are several from which he may gain much, as those on past oral work, preaching and recreation." -The Church Times CONTENTS PREFACE CONFERENCE I. Priesthood In Religious Life written by Stephen Bevans and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-27 with Religion categories.

This is the first book in English on priesthood in religious life to be published in twenty years. Its fourteen contributors search for new ways forward in the understanding of the distinct identity and ministry of religious men—committed to community, the prophetic lifestyle of vows or promises, and the particular charisms of their congregations—who have also answered the call to priesthood. Essays in this collection include reflections from a bishop, from the perspective of a lay theologian, from an expert in the social sciences, and on Pope Francis’s teachings on priesthood. Included as well are essays that are rooted in particular cultural traditions, in spirituality, and in canon law.
