Il santuario rurale di Sant’Eusebio, sito nei pressi di Ronciglione, costituisce un vetusto e prezioso palinsesto architettonico dell’Alto Lazio avente valore paradigmatico sotto l’aspetto storico-artistico oltre che religioso in seno ai percorsi della fede. Le testimonianze archeologiche, artistiche e devozionali custodite al suo interno ne attestano la lunga esistenza che affonda le radici nel Tardo Antico e ne fanno un bene di rilevante valore culturale oltre che religioso. Il volume contiene un’articolata sintesi dello studio storico-architettonico svolto dall’autrice, rivelatosi impegnativo per le numerose alterazioni arrecate nei secoli all’intero organismo del complesso cultuale, un tempo composto dalla chiesa e da una casa comune postica. Questa, in particolare, è ormai irrimediabilmente mutilata per i lunghi periodi d’incuria sofferti nella sua vita millenaria. Il lavoro di ricerca ha inteso offrire un inquadramento nuovo, oltre che aggiornato, dei fatti storici, religiosi e architettonici, letti sullo sfondo di realtà ‘extralocali’ ad esso assimilabili, riscontrate in tutto l’Occidente cristiano. In un secondo volume di Approfondimenti tematici e restauri curato dall’A. e coordinato con questa pubblicazione, sono raccolti sia gli esiti di studi specialistici condotti da diversi esperti su specifici temi di ricerca sollecitati dall’indagine sul monumento (storia del territorio, archeologia, pittura, paleografia) sia l’illustrazione degli interventi di restauro effettuati agli inizi degli anni Duemila. Natalina Mannino, architetto, insegna Storia dell’Architettura antica e medievale nella Facoltà di Architettura, “Sapienza”-Università di Roma. Svolge la sua attività di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Storia, Disegno e Restauro dell’Architettura della medesima Università. È membro del Centro di Studi per la Storia dell’Architettura (CSSAr). È stata docente in programmi di formazione post-universitaria previsti da un accordo internazionale di collaborazione scientifica “Sapienza”, Università di Roma-Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) di Lima, Perù. Ha pubblicato ricerche su argomenti di storia dell’architettura medievale e rinascimentale, di restauro e riqualificazione urbana, di riuso nell’architettura storica. Tra i suoi lavori scientifici, studi sul santuario chigiano di S. Maria della Sughera a Tolfa (RM); sul ruolo delle biblioteche mendicanti nella formazione dello Studium Urbis di Roma; sulla genesi e lo sviluppo delle cripte nell’architettura cristiana; sul recupero e il reimpiego in architettura in età medievale; sull’attività dell’architetto Bernardino da Viterbo. Ha fatto parte di gruppi di ricerca universitari e misti costituiti intorno a specifici temi, tra cui lo studio storico-architettonico del monastero delle Murate di Città di Castello, Perugia (“Sapienza”- CNR); il recupero e la riqualificazione dell’area archeologica del teatro romano di Teramo.

In questo volume si presentano quattro saggi assai diversi tra loro, ma collegati tenacemente da un elemento portante costituito dalla fonte scritta medievale intorno all’importanza della via francigena per la totalità della viabilità dell’epoca. Il saggio su La via Francigena in Toscana costituisce il completamento di quelli già apparsi negli Atti citati e relativi l’uno al passaggio della Francigena attraverso l’Appennino Tosco-emiliano e l’altro al suo percorso nell’alto Lazio. Si ribadisce come la via Francigena rappresenti sì un’innovazione, ma formatasi attraverso il raccordo di diversi spezzoni di strade romane, riusate in una mutata gerarchia e in un contesto storico diverso, che nel suo evolversi implicherà ulteriori varianti nel corso dei secoli, soprattutto nel basso medioevo. Il saggio di Riccardo Chellini affronta i problemi della viabilità a sud-est di Firenze, sottolineando in particolare il rapporto di continuità del percorso medievale con la via Cassia di epoca romana imperiale, anche se con un progressivo declassamento, che la riduce ad un collegamento locale con Arezzo, mentre ne viene abbandonato il proseguimento in direzione di Chiusi per l’impaludarsi della Val di Chiana (almeno agli inizi del XIV secolo), il che porta a privilegiare un andamento pedemontano di tradizione etrusca. Il saggio di Luigi Conti fornisce una preziosa raccolta di inediti e rari documenti d’archivio, che costituiranno una fonte essenziale per una ricostruzione capillare del sistema viario irradiante da Firenze, impiantato e mantenuto tra XIII e XIV secolo dalla Repubblica Fiorentina, anche mediante una dispendiosa operazione di costruzione di ponti.

From 2006 to 2010 I was three times a pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela, in the north of Spain. The first along the Camino Francés, the best known and most popular, almost nine hundred kilometers, from the Pyrenees to the ocean, thirty-six extraordinary, unforgettable days. The second starting from Seville and traveling along the Via de la Plata, a thousand kilometers of desert solitude and silence, a month and a half of exhausting trek. The last one from Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, following in the noble footsteps of King Alfonso II the Chaste through the oldest itinerary, dating back to the early ninth century, and named for this Primitivo. Along the way I tried to keep track of the encounters, the landscapes, the sensations I was experiencing. To be able to remember and relive them. I wrote in the late afternoon before dinner, often every other day, struggling with fatigue. Simple phrases, broken thoughts, images of a moment, to be re-knotted upon returning. In the late Middle Ages, Italy was one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. Its coasts, the Apennines, the perialpine area and the plains were all home to a large number of smaller towns, lands, villages, castra, and 'quasi cites'. These settlements were all very diverse in terms of demographic consistency, social articulation and economic dynamism, but together they constituted a characteristic and constitutive element of the Italian historical identity: an 'original personality'. This volume, thanks to some framing essays and a mapping of individual cases involving most of the northern, central and southern regions, aims at investigating the active research on this topic over the last thirty to forty years.
