In Linear Programming: A Modern Integrated Analysis, both boundary (simplex) and interior point methods are derived from the complementary slackness theorem and, unlike most books, the duality theorem is derived from Farkas's Lemma, which is proved as a convex separation theorem. The tedium of the simplex method is thus avoided. A new and inductive proof of Kantorovich's Theorem is offered, related to the convergence of Newton's method. Of the boundary methods, the book presents the (revised) primal and the dual simplex methods. An extensive discussion is given of the primal, dual and primal-dual affine scaling methods. In addition, the proof of the convergence under degeneracy, a bounded variable variant, and a super-linearly convergent variant of the primal affine scaling method are covered in one chapter. Polynomial barrier or path-following homotopy methods, and the projective transformation method are also covered in the interior point chapter. Besides the popular sparse Cholesky factorization and the conjugate gradient method, new methods are presented in a separate chapter on implementation. These methods use LQ factorization and iterative techniques.

At the same time, we try to present a quick overview of the impact of extensions of IPMs on smooth nonlinear optimization and to demonstrate the potential of IPMs for solving difficult practical problems. The Simplex Method has dominated the theory and practice of mathematical pro gramming since 1947 when Dantzig discovered it. In the fifties and sixties several attempts were made to develop alternative solution methods. At that time the prin cipal base of interior point methods was also developed, for example in the work of Frisch (1955), Caroll (1961), Huard (1967), Fiacco and McCormick (1968) and Dikin (1967). In 1972 Klee and Minty made explicit that in the worst case some variants of the simplex method may require an exponential amount of work to solve Linear Programming (LP) problems. This was at the time when complexity theory became a topic of great interest. People started to classify mathematical programming prob lems as efficiently (in polynomial time) solvable and as difficult (NP-hard) problems. For a while it remained open whether LP was solvable in polynomial time or not. The break-through resolution ofthis problem was obtained by Khachijan (1989).

In 1986, B.K.P. Horn published a book entitled Robot Vision, which actually discussed a wider ?eld of subjects, basically addressing the ?eld of computer vision, but introducing “robot vision” as a technical term. Since then, the - teraction between computer vision and research on mobile systems (often called “robots”, e.g., in an industrial context, but also including vehicles, such as cars, wheelchairs, tower cranes, and so forth) established a diverse area of research, today known as robot vision. Robot vision (or, more general, robotics) is a fast-growing discipline, already taught as a dedicated teaching program at university level. The term “robot vision” addresses any autonomous behavior of a technical system supported by visual sensoric information. While robot vision focusses on the vision process, visual robotics is more directed toward control and automatization. In practice, however, both ?elds strongly interact. Robot Vision 2008 was the second international workshop, counting a 2001 workshop with identical name as the ?rst in this series. Both workshops were organized in close cooperation between researchers from New Zealand and Germany, and took place at The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Participants of the 2008 workshop came from Europe, USA, South America, the Middle East, the Far East, Australia, and of course from New Zealand.

This book investigates adaptive physical-layer beamforming and resource allocation that ensure reliable data transmission in the multi-antenna broadcast channel. The book provides an overview of robust optimization techniques and modelling approximations to deal with stochastic performance metrics. One key contribution of the book is a closed-form description of the achievable rates with unlimited transmit power for a rank-one channel error model. Additionally, the book provides a concise duality framework to transform mean square error (MSE) based beamformer designs, e.g., quality of service and balancing optimizations, into equivalent uplink filter designs. For the algorithmic solution, the book analyses the following paradigm: transmission to receivers with large MSE targets (low demands) is switched off if the transmit power is low. The book also studies chance constrained optimizations for limiting the outage probability. In this context, the book provides two novel conservative outage probability approximations, that result in convex beamformer optimizations. To compensate for the remaining inaccuracy, the book introduces a post-processing power allocation. Finally, the book applies the introduced beamformer designs for SatCom, where interference from neighboring spotbeams and channel fading are the main limitations.
