This volume represents the formal presentations and discussions which took place during a three-day meeting in March 1988 at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. It is" dedicated to my friend of more than thirty years, Prof. Dr. Klaus Joachim Ziilch, who died in Berlin on December 2. 1988 while this volume was still in preparation. Klaus Zulch had devoted a significant portion of his professional life to a better understanding of central nervous tumors. Over the past two decades he served as the Director of the Collaborating Center for CNS Tumors, under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO), and it was largely through his efforts that the work of the CelJ. ter in developing criteria for a histologic classification of these neoplasms was kept alive. Without his stimulus this Houston meeting would probably not have taken place. In early 1987 he approached me with the idea of convening, at an early date, a meeting in Houston in collaboration with the Department of Neuro-Oncology of the Cancer Center, of which I was then Chairman. The purpose of this proposed meeting was to discuss recent research developments that might have a profound influence on the classification of brain tumors and ultimately necessitate revision of the "Blue Book" of the WHO on Histological Typing 0/ Tumours 0/ the Central Nervous System.

Gliomas (astrocytomas) are a common type of brain tumour treated by neurosurgeons. This volume offers practical guidance on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with these slow-growing, non-malignant brain tumours. Algorithms and case histories apply theory to real-world challenges and aid in diagnosis, staging and treatment. Areas covered include: diagnostic imaging; surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy; epilepsy and low-grade gliomas; and genetic counselling. A chapter on guidelines and outcome analysis offers information that the reader can put to work in clinical practice.

The remaining two sections are comprised of treatment-oriented chapters covering the spectrum of gliomas and rarer tumor types. Each of these chapters presents multi-disciplinary therapeutic approaches and addresses specific disease concerns. Throughout, the authors incorporate the cutting-edge advances in molecular biology and genomics that are revolutionizing neuro-oncology. The result is an important clinical resource which provides evidence-based data and interpretation essential to intelligent therapeutic decision making.

With an annual rate of more than 12 million global diagnoses and 7.6 million deaths, the societal and economic burden of cancer cannot be overstated. Brain metastases are the most common malignant tumors of the central nervous system, yet their incidence appears to be increasing in spite of the advancement of cancer therapies. While much is known about primary cancers (including primary brain tumors), less work has been done to uncover the roots of metastatic disease. Brain Metastases from Primary Tumors Volume 1 fills that gap, serving as the first reference to focus primarily on the link between primary cancers and brain metastases. This link is explored for the most common cancer types – lung, breast, and melanoma. Additionally, biological background as well as therapy for CNS metastases is addressed. Age and gender related trends are also discussed, as is the use of biomarkers for early detection. The only comprehensive reference detailing the link between primary cancers and brain metastases Aids the target audience in determining the incidence of brain metastases in patients with a primary cancer Provided education about the potential use of biomarkers for early detection, diagnosis and prevention of the spread of primary cancer to the brain Documents temporal and gender-related trends in brain metastases from other cancers Edited work with chapters authored by leaders in the field around the globe – the broadest, most expert coverage available

Despite the availability of many effective treatments, there remains a therapeutic nihilism associated with brain tumors. This highly readable second edition of 'Fast Facts: Brain Tumors' challenges this view, starting from the premise that patients with brain tumors can truly benefit from a thoughtful multidisciplinary approach. This comprehensive handbook covers all the salient features of the various brain tumors and treatment modalities in a way that will be useful to the practicing clinician. • Advances in radiology and pathology that have led to more precise and detailed diagnoses • Developments in molecular biology and imaging techniques that have improved available diagnostic modalities • New neurosurgical techniques that have enabled operations on tumors that were previously considered inoperable • Novel delivery systems that allow various treatments to reach tumors that are otherwise protected by the blood-brain barrier. This fully updated edition of 'Fast Facts: Brain Tumors' bridges the gap between primary care providers - whose role is pivotal in tumor detection and subsequent patient care - and first-level specialists such as general neurologists and neurosurgeons. Its key message is that selection of the best initial approach for an individual patient will result in the best overall outcome, both in terms of survival and quality of life. 'Fast Facts: Brain Tumors' is specifically for the primary care physician whose role is pivotal in tumor detection and subsequent patient care. Contents: • Classification and epidemiology • Diagnosis • Treatment • Brain metastases • Gliomas • Meningiomas • Neuronal tumors • Pineal region tumors • Skull base tumors • Primary central nervous system lymphoma • Brain tumor syndromes and tumor-like cysts • Geriatric neuro-oncology • Useful resources
