This is the first comprehensive overview of this topic. It serves as a single source for information about the properties, preparation, and uses of all relevant primary explosives. The first chapter provides background such as the basics of initiation and differences between requirements on primary explosives used in detonators and igniters. The authors then clarify the influence of physical characteristics on explosive properties, focusing on those properties required for primary explosives. Furthermore, the issue of sensitivity is discussed. All the chapters on particular groups of primary explosives are structured in the same way, including introduction, physical and chemical properties, explosive properties, preparation and documented use. The authors thoroughly verified all data and information. A unique feature of this book are original microscopic images of some explosives.

Revised and expanded to reflect new developments in the field, this book outlines the basic principles required to understand the chemical processes of explosives. The Chemistry of Explosives provides an overview of the history of explosives, taking the reader to future developments. The text on the classification of explosive materials contains much data on the physical parameters of primary and secondary explosives. The explosive processes of deflagration and detonation, including the theory of ‘hotspots’ for the detonation process, are introduced and many examples are provided in the detailed description on the thermochemistry of explosives. New material includes coverage of the latest explosive compositions, such as high temperature explosives, nitrocubanes, energetic polymers, plasticizers and insensitive munitions (IM). This concise, readable book is ideal for students and new graduates with no previous knowledge of explosive materials. With detailed information on a vast range of explosives in tabular form and an extensive bibliography, this book will also be useful to anyone needing succinct information on the subject.

It seems that there is no book that treats the measurement of the physical pa rameters of explosives as its only subject, although limited information is avail able in a number of books. Therefore, I have tried to bridge this gap in the lit erature with this book. A large number of various physical parameters have to be determined ex perimentally in order to test or characterise an explosive. Various physical principles have been applied for such measurements. Accordingly, a large number of different experimental methods exist, as well as various testing appa ratuses and procedures. On the other hand, great progress has been made recently in the study of detonation phenomena. New measuring techniques can assess extremely short processes to below nanoseconds scale. They make it possible to determine im portant parameters in detonation physics. I have made a great attempt to cover the available literature data on the subject. Because it would be a highly demanding task to include in a single volume all the methods that are in use by various testing agencies, I have tried to give primarily the principles for determination of individual physical pa rameters of explosives by different measuring methods as well as data treatment procedures.

Demystifying Explosives: Concepts in High Energy Materials explains the basic concepts of and the science behind the entire spectrum of high energy materials (HEMs) and gives a broad perspective about all types of HEMs and their interrelationships. Demystifying Explosives covers topics ranging from explosives, deflagration, detonation, and pyrotechnics to safety and security aspects of HEMS, looking at their aspects, particularly their inter-relatedness with respect to properties and performance. The book explains concepts related to the molecular structure of HEMs, their properties, performance parameters, detonation and shock waves including explosives and propellants. The theory-based title also deals with important (safety and security) and interesting (constructive applications) aspects connected with HEMs and is of fundamental use to students in their introduction to these materials and applications. - Explains the concept of high energy materials in simple language and down-to-earth examples - Worked examples and problems are given wherever required - Demystifies the concept of explosives - Limited use of big and complex equations - Questions and Suggested Reading are given at the end of each chapter

Terrorism and WMDs: Awareness and Response, Third Edition is fully updated to include the latest technology and tactics surrounding the threats posed by terrorist groups—detailing plausible contexts in which chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) weapons could be used by such actors. Experienced author Gus Martin has collaborated on updating this resource, with two new chapters at the start of the book outlining the historical origins of terrorism, terrorist typologies, and the evolution of the modern terrorist environment including large-scale regional conflicts and domestic violent extremism in the United States. Additional coverage of new case studies have been added throughout. This includes an examination of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, and additional events that have occurred since the last edition’s release. Domestic U.S. threats—from hate, extremist, and supremacist groups—are discussed, as well as emergent and novel tactics being used in the Israel-Gaza conflict and the 2022 Russian invasion and subsequent Russia-Ukraine conflict are examined. This includes the use of drone attacks by both Ukraine and Russia and Russia’s occupation and bombardment of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), highlighting what could be argued are terror-like tactics that challenge the precepts of accepted international law. In the Middle East, Israel’s response in the wake of the October 7, 2023 attack by Islamist terrorists—with its subsequent operations in Gaza and an unprecedented operation involving exploding pagers and communications radios in Lebanon and Syria—evoked international criticism and controversy. Coverage also focuses on the chemistry and biology of weapons of mass destruction and, the development and history of their use, as well as the human health effects of such weapons. Added references, chapter questions—and the addition of recent terrorist acts to relevant sections—all present the modern threat environment and realistic WMD material access and attack capabilities. Given that terrorist weapons and delivery methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the book provides a comprehensive, current survey of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. As such, Terrorism and WMDs, Third Edition continues to serve as an invaluable resource to students and professionals studying and working in the fields of terrorism, Homeland Security, and emergency response.
