Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Teaching: A Manual for Normal Schools, Reading Circles, and the Teachers of Elementary, Intermediate, and Higher Schools The art of teaching should have its foundations in science; for then and only then will teaching cease to be mechanical obedience to "authority." Such obedience was the curse of the "old" education. "Tradition" and "prescription" determined the methods not only in oriental systems of education, but also in the later civilizations of Europe. The principle of authority has not wholly disappeared from modern schoolrooms. Rational methods of teaching, indeed, are the exception rather than the rule in the great mass of American teachers. The individual teacher must have part in the construction of the science in which his art is to have its foundations. Otherwise the "new" education will simply substitute one tyrant for another. In other words, obedience to principles of philosophy, though it be the best philosophy, is only slavery as long as the teacher who submits to such laws cannot justify these in his own consciousness. The great mass of teachers is not equal to the task of constructing the complex science of education independently. This task implies not only analytic knowledge of human nature in its manifold relations, but also the power of synthetic thought. The great body of teachers, therefore, need supervision in constructing their system of educational principles. It is hoped that the plan of the present treatise may supply at least a portion of the needed supervision. Excerpt from Action Reading: A Supplementary Method of Teaching, Beginners to Read Action reading, so called, is a system for the earliest stage of learning to read. Its chief virtue lies in the fact that it easily secures intense attention, and intensity of attention is a necessary condition and measure of the degree of any kind of learning. As a method, it is not intended as a substitute for the usual primer-methods - phonics, word or sen tence learning, etc. - but it is a system to accompany them, offering the relief of change. It is especially adapted for pupils who are just entering school and are finding their energies for action curbed by the requirements of the school to sit still. By easily securing their attention and by offering opportunity for movements, it is a suitable exercise for beginners. Secondly, it will be found especially adapted for foreign children who do not understand English, and for backward pupils whose attention it is usually difficult to secure. The commands are written upon the board for class action, and these foreign or backward children will first imitate their fellows, but gradually will learn to associate a given act with its written command. For successful use of this system, it is essential that the teacher should have a clear comprehension of the dis tinction in principle between it and the other methods of teaching read ing. When a child comes to school, he already has an oral language. The usual methods proceed to translate the new written language into the forms of spoken language by which the pupil understands. Action reading passes directly from the written language to the understanding. It is not translation into oral language. Excerpt from Modern Methods of Teaching: Language, Reading, Spelling The methods of teaching Language, Reading and Spelling as presented in this volume are the result of many years of experience of the author both as a class teacher and as a supervisor. They have in the main been subjected to the crucial test of the schoolroom by the teachers of the elementary school connected with the Milwaukee State Normal School. The author desires to acknowledge his obligations to the principal and the teachers of this school and to the teacher of Language Arts in the Normal School, for valuable suggestions which have been embodied in the book. In the presentation of the methods no attempt at elaborateness is made. Simplicity, directness and naturalness have been the keynotes the author has had in mind. It was thought best to reduce the theoretical discussion of method to as brief a compass as possible, in order to secure the necessary space for illustrative exercises by means of which principles of teaching and special methods of procedure could be exemplified in a practical way. Excerpt from Essentials of Teaching Reading There seems to be no scarcity of thoroughly good manual of elocution, of expositions of primary methods, and of essays on the teaching of literature. Each field of work, excepting possibly that of methods in intermediate and grammar-school reading, seems to be satisfactorily covered by the material contained in a half-dozen books, each one of which touches but a single department. There seems to have been no book which includes those things in all the departments that are of practical value to the ordinary teacher. This book is planned to meet this need. Effort has been made to cover all that is of real use to the teacher in the many lines of reading work. Effort has been made to cover all the essential elements that the good teacher of reading should know, and to omit all that is not essential. It has been attempted to put under one cover at least the minimum of what the teacher of reading should know. No attempt has been made to invent novel methods, or to make the book a dictionary of devices. No good thing has been omitted because it is old. The authors feel pleased rather then chagrined when an experienced teacher says, "That plan is not new. I have been using it for years." As a matter of fact, all of the methods explained have been tested by experience. Part Three, including the chapters on Primary Methods, Parts of a Recitation and Assignment of the Lesson, Classification of Material, Obstacles to Good Expression, Use of the Dictionary, Articulation, and the Illustrative Lessons, is the most important part of the book.
