Excerpt from Ideals and Principles of Church Reform It is one of the merits of Mr. Barry's work that it seriously questions these assumptions. It questions their title to be counted Christian, and it disputes their practicability in the world in which we live, or in any world of which we need to take account. What we want for practical efficiency is not the legal incorporation of all who adhere to the same doctrine, worship, and discipline, but the moral integration of all who call jesus Lord. Excerpt from Principles of the Reformation: Practical and Historical I have ventured to collect these studies in the history and the practical principles of the Reformation, in the hope that they may do something to promote a better appreciation among us of the depth and grandeur of that great movement. They are the result of many years' study of the writings of Luther, and of the chief sources in Which the course of the movement is to be seen; and I hope that they Will be found to indicate some of the deep springs in human thought and experience which brought a new life to the Christian Church and to Europe at that time. Excerpt from Church Reform If, as we fully admit, the Church system, as at present organized, to a great extent fails in the fulfilment of the Object for which it exists, the fault lies not in the national principle, but in the wrong working and application of that principle, and it becomes the duty of Parliament, which is responsible for the efficient working of that principle, to introduce such reforms into its organization as may help the Church to fulfil with greater efficiency its noble and sacred work. Excerpt from The Theology of the Reformed Church: In Its Fundamental Principles The Theology of the Reformed Church had early taken possession of Dr. Hastie's mind and heart, and it absorbed his interest more and more as the years went on. He confessed to have no higher nor other aim in all his theological work than to ascertain, vindicate, and apply anew the fundamental and essential principles which he regarded as those of our National Church. The characteristic Reformed Principle of Predestina tion was the subject of the very last lecture he gave to his senior class. It is much to be regretted that he did not live to complete the elaborate and comprehensive work which he had in contemplation. The Rev. W. Fulton, a student and friend of Dr. Hastie, has carefully edited the work now given to the public. He has substituted the form of chapters for that of lectures as the more appropriate; filled up a considerable number of gaps; verified most of the quotations, and given references to the more important. In the quota tions from john Knox's works he has retained the modernised spelling found in the ms. In a word, he has done what he could in order that Dr. Hastie's views should be correctly stated in his own words. Excerpt from English Church Reform, 1815-1840 The reform movement which triumphed in 1832 envisaged the ecclesiastical as well as the civil constitution; and we cannot appreciate the position of the Church at this crisis without some knowledge of the attitude it had assumed, towards the social and political problems which had been ripening for solution since the close of the Napoleonic War. But this attitude was determined to some extent by the principles of religious parties and, as these parties must be constantly referred to, it will be well at the outset to review their origin and character.
