A comprehensive overview of what psychologists now know about the nature of cognition Principles of Cognition provides students with an invaluable introduction to the modern science of cognition, blending invaluable insights from behavioral and neuroscientific studies of humans and other animals with unique examples, cutting-edge research summaries, and real-world applications. This accessible textbook builds on the legacy of psychologist William James by emphasizing not only the form cognition takes in laboratory research but also the functional dynamics of cognitive processes in everyday life and the ways they vary across individuals and species. Using an integrative approach that highlights the relevance of cognition across psychological disciplines, it engages students by showing how cognition emerges over time, how cognitive abilities can be improved, and how thinking can be upended by something as simple as falling in love. Discusses topics in cognition rarely covered by other textbooks, including perception of time and space, consciousness, animal cognition, mathematical and reading skills, emotions, intelligence, generalization, and social cognition Emphasizes learning and its interactions with memory and cognition Features practical applications from cognitive research in every chapter Connects topics across chapters to promote retention and critical thinking Draws on the latest experimental, naturalistic, and applied research Integrates findings about animals and children with traditional studies of adults to develop a more neurally grounded framework for thinking about the mechanisms of cognition An ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate classrooms

This book addresses a growing concern as to why Psychology, now more than a hundred years after becoming an independent research area, does not yet meet the basic requirements of a scientific discipline on a par with other sciences such as physics and biology. These requirements include: agree ment on definition and delimitation of the range of features and properties of the phenomena or subject matter to be investigated; secondly, the development of concepts and methods which unambiguously specify the phenomena and systematic investigation of their features and properties. A third equally important requirement, implicit in the first two, is exclusion from enquiry of all other mattes with which the discipline is not concerned. To these requirements must then be added the development of basic assumptions about the nature of what is under investigation, and of principles to account for its properties and to serve as a guide as to what are relevant questions to ask and theories to develop about them.

Tetranomics investigates the profound fourfold principles that structure reality, intelligence, and recursive synthesis. Rooted in the Greek terms tétra (four) and nomos (law), this emerging field unveils the fundamental quaternary frameworks that permeate cognition, physics, and adaptive systems. By analyzing the recurrence of fourfold structures—ranging from the four classical elements and four cardinal directions to the four fundamental forces of nature and the four nucleobases of DNA—Tetranomics formalizes a unified approach to understanding the interconnected nature of existence. Drawing inspiration from the Pythagorean Tetraktys, an ancient geometric symbol signifying cosmic harmony, Tetranomics examines how recursive intelligence and systemic order manifest through quaternary structures across disciplines. The book explores how the principle of nomos, originally denoting law and systemic order in Greek philosophy, extends beyond human constructs to define the fundamental organizational patterns governing the cosmos. Through an interdisciplinary synthesis of mathematics, physics, cognition, and complexity theory, Tetranomics provides a transformative perspective on how intelligence structures itself recursively. It reveals how quaternary principles inform everything from biological evolution to artificial intelligence, offering new insights into the structured and lawful nature of intelligence across multiple dimensions. Whether you are a philosopher, scientist, engineer, or systems theorist, Tetranomics challenges conventional paradigms and introduces a powerful new model for understanding the deep, recursive architecture of reality.
