Excerpt from Principles of Education: Applied to Practice This IS the day of pedagogical unrest. The history of education has never found a time when the struggle (1) to derive sound educational theory, and (2) to realize that theory in actual practice, was so keen as at the present time. Strangely enough, one of our most seri ous problems has been to get a proper orientation by first defining the mm of education. This is one problem in which our unrest is rooted. Excerpt from The Principles of Education During the later decades of the nineteenth century philosophy and psychology dominated the theory of education. From the principles of these two fields methods were deduced for which the claim was made that they produced the best results in instructional practice. During the twentieth century, however, experimental science has been the dominant method. Without regard for the philosophical point of view, specific methods of teaching, of supervision, and of administration have been studied in localized situations to discover the better practice. During these two latter decades a very considerable body of technique has been collected and to this constant accretions are being made. The force of the scientific impulse is, fortunately, not yet expended and it is confidently expected to continue indefinitely with increasing value. But since the tendency of science is to produce a body of technique, particle by particle, as investigators study small individual and relatively isolated problems, central attitudes and principles are temporarily ignored. The result of this is that the orientation of the whole mass of technique is lost sight of and those who practice do so without clear ultimate purposes in mind. Excerpt from The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice The last ten years have seen greater progress in religious education than any preceding decade, perhaps greater than any five decades. When this book was first published, a little over eight years ago, it advocated many reforms which have now become accomplished facts. On the educational principles then laid down the school has been reorganised or at least the principles have been accepted and the newer methods accepted so that it is no longer necessary to treat them in a prophetic manner except to explain their elabo ration and intrication and to look forward to their further development. In addition so many new opportunities have opened up to the school and, as our social life has changed, some new duties have appeared before it. Perhaps the need for a thorough revision of a book on methods is the best evidence of the progress and increased efficiency of the Sunday school.
