Excerpt from Principles of Foreign Trade Assuming that an educational book is authoritative and that its author by training, experience, and study is qualified to instruct or is entitled to express his opinions, the value of the book then depends upon its timeliness and the thoroughness with which it discusses or teaches the particular subject matter. Regarding the timeliness of this book, little need be said. The growing interest in foreign trade among even the smaller manufacturers and producers of the United States is largely the natural effect of two causes: first, the unprecedented demands of the war which led to an increase of facilities to fill these demands; and second, now that the war is over, the necessity of finding outlets for the increased production brought about by the creation of these facilities. The author recognizes the possibility of the criticism that much of his advice on the conduct of foreign trade is too "ideal" in its tone, and that to carry out all the plans and suggestions in the ideal way outlined here is impracticable for the business with limited resources. This is perfectly true. In the smaller business, the "rule of thumb" method must of necessity obtain and the existing mechanism be expanded with but little special preparation to embrace the foreign exploitation. Nevertheless, it is always well to have a model, according to which action should be adjusted as nearly as possible. It may also be said that the aim of the book is not primarily to teach the exporter how to sell abroad his particular goods. This he can readily learn after he has mastered the general principles and grasped the mechanism of the subject, adopting so far as applicable the same methods abroad that have proved successful at home. Excerpt from Principles of Commerce: A Study of the Mechanism, the Advantages, and the Transportation Costs of Foreign and Domestic Trade Part II succeeds logically to Part I. The money and credit mechanism of commerce having been described and its operation explained in Part I, Part II begins with a consideration of the gains of trade, whether the trade is within a single country or between countries. Then comes a discussion regarding the Shares of two or more countries in the gains resulting from their trade with each other. Chapter III deals with the shifting and incidence of revenue tariffs on imports and exports. In the remainder of Part II, I have considered govern mental interferences with and favors to trade, such as protective tariffs, bounties, navigation acts, canal build ing at public expense without charge to the users, land grants in encouragement of railway building, etc.; and have explained what effects are to be expected from these various policies. Excerpt from Selected Readings in International Trade and Tariff Problems The volume will suffice as the sole textbook, or the sole required reading, in a substantial university course on its subject. It can be used, however, as supplementary reading where a single textbook of the usual type forms the backbone of the instruction. While pri marily for use in universities and colleges, where emphasis may be expected to be given to the strictly economic aspects of the subject rather than to the business aspects, the volume should prove useful also in courses given in business schools. These latter too often are devoid of any consideration of the economic principles and would be improved by a widening of their scope. As the table of contents indicates, the book is divided into three parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book, Principles of International Trade: Import-Export, is intended for students studying international trade and for business people who want to engage in international trade. This book covers the basic concepts and procedures that are required for starting and completing international transactions. All businesses, regardless of whether they do only domestic business or not, are affected by international trade and business. Consumers encounter imported products at most retail stores, and domestic businesses are exposed to stiff foreign competition. As a consumer or as a businessperson, all of us need to understand international trade for our own benefits. The draft version of this book, annually or biannually revised, had been used as a textbook at California State University, Los Angeles, California (Cal State, Los Angeles), and Pacific States University, Los Angeles, California (PSU), for over ten years before this book was first published in 1993 with the help and encouragement of my family, friends, students, and colleagues at both campuses. This book consists of thirty-seven chapters, a bibliography, websites, indexes, and endnotes. The text is divided into two parts. The first part, chapters 1 through 27, covers matters for importing goods from overseas and common topics related to both importing and exporting. The second part, chapters 28 through 37, is devoted to topics for exporting overseas. This new edition includes the latest Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits No. 600 (2007 Revision) and Incoterms 2010 published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Instructors teaching materials for international trade (import-export), such as PowerPoint slides and key points for examinations, are available at the authors website: http://www.internationaltraderesearch.com. The material and information in this text have been brought current as of June 1, 2017. Any errors or omissions exclusively belong to me. I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, or recommendations directed to me at my email address: [email protected] or fax 626-795-5196. Your comments, suggestions, or recommendations will be used in improving this book at the next publication.
