This book provides a comprehensive overview of the management of brain and skull base tumors. It features detailed insight into the intrinsic molecular biology, anatomical foundation, radiological planning, surgical execution, and the novel therapeutics that guide today’s treatment regimens. The first section features concepts related to the epidemiology and pathological basis of disease processes, including relevant cellular and molecular biology. In the second section, integral anatomical foundations and principles are covered including microsurgical anatomy of the cerebrum, white matter tracts, ventricles, brainstem, skull base, advancements in radiological imaging, and cognitive examinations. Surgical approaches and how to execute these procedures are then subsequently discussed in the third part of the work. Principles of Neuro-Oncology: Brain & Skull Base is a practically applicable guide to the latest treatment techniques available to treat these patients. Therefore, it is an indispensable resource for all physicians who utilize these methodologies in their day-to-day practice.

Many recent developments in neuro-oncology relevant to clinical practice have contributed to improved patient care. The most im portant impact of these developments on treatment may have been a change in the attitudes of the neuro-oncologists involved in making decisions regarding patients with gliomas. From an era of uncertainty which led to therapeutic nihilism, we have entered one of active interventions based on objective parameters for the treat ment of gliomas, which may be either slow-growing or rapid kil lers. The histopathological characteristics of gliomatous lesions are intriguing, and it is only recently that a clearer picture has begun to emerge. A group of dedicated neuropathologists has been at tempting to reach a consensus on pathological classification and grading, providing an important landmark in the field of neuro oncology. This book does not mean to provide exhaustive details on the histopathology of gliomas, but rather highlights the main problems in an authoritative chapter. This chapter attempts to guide the reader to a better understanding of all aspects of the neuropathology of glioma. Neuroradiology has recently seen several breakthroughs. Im ages unimaginable a decade ago are now providing us with an al most three-dimensional impression. But the concomitant illusions and artifacts must also be kept in mind, and pragmatic ideas are carefully put forward in this book about the developing body of knowledge concerning the newer imaging techniques.

The aim of the Neurology in Practice series is to provide a clinical 'in the office' or 'at the bedside' guide to effective patient care for neurologists in practice and in training. The tone will be practical, not academic. The working assumption is that readers want to know what (and what not) might or should be done, without over emphasis on the why. That said, it is important to review the crucial basic science necessary for effective diagnosis and management, and to provide reminders in the context of the practical chapters. The books will not be heavily referenced, in line with a more practical approach. This allows for smoother reading (and also relieves the burden of comprehensive citing from authors). Key evidence (clinical trials, Cochrane or other meta analyses) should be summarized in 'Evidence at a Glance' boxes and key references such as reviews, major papers can be provided in the 'selected bibliography' at the end of each chapter. Practical guidance will be provided through: the use of algorithms and guidelines where they are appropriate 'Tips and Tricks' boxes – hints on improving outcomes perhaps via practical technique, patient questioning etc 'Caution' warning boxes – hints on avoiding problems, perhaps via contraindications 'Science Revisited' – quick reminder of the basic science principles necessary for understanding

This book describes the basics, the challenges and the limitations of state of the art brain tumor imaging and examines in detail its impact on diagnosis and treatment monitoring. It opens with an introduction to the clinically relevant physical principles of brain imaging. Since MR methodology plays a crucial role in brain imaging, the fundamental aspects of MR spectroscopy, MR perfusion and diffusion-weighted MR methods are described, focusing on the specific demands of brain tumor imaging. The potential and the limits of new imaging methodology are carefully addressed and compared to conventional MR imaging. In the main part of the book, the most important imaging criteria for the differential diagnosis of solid and necrotic brain tumors are delineated and illustrated in examples. A closing section is devoted to the use of MR methods for the monitoring of brain tumor therapy. The book is intended for radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists and other scientists in the biomedical field with an interest in neuro-oncology.
