This volume is a selection of the most significant papers Yu,V. Riz nichenko wrote during his 30-year career and concerns the development of fundamental problems of seismology. The book is in five parts. The first is devoted to source seismicity. It starts with a chapter on the "elementary unit" of seismicity, viz. the earthquake source. The size of an earthquake is in itself a significant problem in seismology and, is discussed here. The main energetic parameters of the source are consi dered, namely, seismic energy, magnitude, seismic moment, geometric size of the main fault, displacements along the fault, and stress drop. The main results of comparison, mutual adjustment and correlations between these parameters are presented. The following chapters are a logical continuation of the first: from an individual earthquake source to a set of earthquakes in space and time, viz. a seismic regime. The chapters convey the now classical principles of seismic regime parametrization and mapping techniques for long-term average seismic activity based on basic principles. How to determine the maximum possible earthquake is a central question. Both the theoretical (or gnostic) and practical i.e. seismic zon ing, aspects are considered. Methods of determining and mapping the maximum possible earthquakes are proposed, in particular, by correlating them with seismic activity and, in general, from seismological and other geophysical, geological, geomorphological and geodetical data sets.

Earthquakes come and go as they please, leaving behind them trails of destruc tion and casualties. Although their occurrence is little affected by what we do or think, it is the task of earth scientists to keep studying them from all possible angles until ways and means are found to divert, forecast, and eventually control them. In ancient times people were awestruck by singular geophysical events, which were attributed to supernatural powers. It was recognized only in 1760 that earthquakes originated within the earth. A hundred years later, first systematic attempts were made to apply physical principles to study them. During the next century scientists accumulated knowledge about the effects of earthquakes, their geographic patterns, the waves emitted by them, and the internal constitution of the earth. During the past 20 years, seismology has made a tremendous progress, mainly because of the advent of modern computers and improvements in data acquisi tion systems, which are now capable of digital and analog recording of ground motion over a frequency range of five orders of magnitude. These technologic developments have enabled seismologists to make measurements with far greater precision and sophistication than was previously possible. Advanced computational analyses have been applied to high-quality data and elaborate theoretical models have been devised to interpret them. As a result, far reaching advances in our knowledge of the earth's structure and the nature of earthquake sources have occurred.

This book is about marine seismic sources, their history, their physical principles and their deconvolution. It is particularly accented towards the physical aspects rather than the mathematical principles of signature generation in water as it is these aspects which the authors have found to be somewhat neglected. A huge amount of research has been carried out by both commercial and academic institutions over the years and the resulting literature is a little daunting, to say the least. In spite of this, the subject is intrinsically very simple and relies on a very few fundamental physical principles, a somewhat larger number of heuristic principles and a refreshingly small amount of blunderbuss mathematics. As such it is still one of those subjects in which the gifted practical engineer reigns supreme and from which many of the important advances have originated. In Chapter 1 of the book, the underlying physics and concepts are discussed, including pressure and wave propagation, bubble motion, virtual images and the factors determining choice of source. In marine reflection seismology, almost all of the seismic data acquired currently is done with either the airgun or the watergun, which rely on the expulsion of air and water respectively to generate acoustic energy. As a consequence, the discussion in this chapter is geared towards these two sources, as is much of the rest of the book.
