This text is designed to present a comprehensive state-of-the-art approach to options available for inguinal hernia repair. Early chapters address anatomic evaluation of the groin, preoperative optimization of outcomes, and considerations in choosing a surgical technique. It then transitions to the clinical management of this common medical condition, specifically focusing on operative details. Written by experts in the field of hernia repair, the clinical chapters detail both open and minimally invasive techniques for repair including detailed anatomic drawings, surgical photos, and links to videos of operative techniques. Postoperative management is explained, detailing the common complications and addressing the importance of surgical outcomes, especially in the setting of “pay for performance” metrics. The final section of the text concludes with the management of inguinal hernias in select situations, including children, those performed with concomitant procedures, and modifications for training residents in this common surgical procedure. Each chapter includes a review of the published literature and selected references, along with anatomic illustrations, videos from operative interventions, and surgical photos to help reinforce the text. Surgical Principles in Inguinal Hernia Repair: A Comprehensive Guide to Anatomy and Operative Techniques will serve as a comprehensive resource for surgeons on patient preparation, surgical techniques, and outcomes for the management of inguinal hernias.

Excerpt from Principles of Surgical Nursing: A Guide to Modern Surgical Technic The recovery of a patient undergoing an operation is dependent to a large extent upon the technique that is employed and observed during the entire surgical procedure. It is by reason of the high development of present-day surgical technique that many of the operations now under taken result in a low mortality, whereas, the same operations a few years ago either produced a high mortality or were not attempted. Further more, many procedures are now possible which formerly were not to be considered, because a fatal ending invariably resulted by reason of infection. The EAES Manual of Endoscopic Surgery provides surgeons and surgical residents with the best practical knowledge currently available on commonly performed minimally invasive abdominal and thoracic procedures. Expert European surgeons share their career-long experience by dissecting operative procedures step by step and highlighting potential technical and anatomical hazards. Authors instruct the reader in a fashion similar to the conversations that take place between master surgeons and their apprentices while scrubbing for surgery. Uniform full color illustrations complete the detailed descriptions of minimally invasive surgeries. In addition to the operative instructions, a key component of the manual is the provision of information on patient selection, choice of operative approach, special needs for minimally invasive procedures, and the early diagnosis and treatment of complications after surgery.

This book has become necessary as a consequence of the rapid expansion of the surgical procedures and implants available for spinal surgery within the "AO Group". We have not attempted to write an in-depth book on spinal surgery, but one which will help the surgeon in the use of AO concepts and implants. We con sider the practical courses held all over the world essential for the teaching of sound techniques so that technical complications and poor results can be avoid ed for both the surgeon and, in particular the patient. This book is a practical manual and an outline of what is taught in the courses. It is intended to help the young spinal surgeon to understand the correct use of AO implants. The indi- tions given will aid the correct use of each procedure. . It must be strongly emphasized that surgery of the spine is technically de manding. The techniques described in this book should only be undertaken by surgeons who are trained and experienced in spinal surgery. Certain techniques, in particular pedicle screw fIxation and cages, have not yet been fully approved by the FDA in the United States. However, throughout the rest of the world, the use of pedicle screws has become a standard technique for the spine surgeon, since it has been shown to improve fIxation techniques and allow segmental correction of the spine. The use of cages has become more and more popular, specifIcally as a tool of minimally invasive spinal surgery.
