Excerpt from The General Principles of Language: Or, the Philosophy of Grammar The study of Grammar has been so constantly pursued in a manner almost purely mechanical, that both teachers and pupils seem to have generally forgotten that any theory or philosophical basis can exist on which its great general principles arc founded. It is true that the usage of each particular language will always guide and govern the practice of that language; but besides this, the facts that words represent ideas, and that the connexions between ideas in the mind must be indicated by corresponding connexions in the words, afford a common basis for the great general rules which are identical in all languages. Tho following treatise is an attempt to explain and illustrate these general principles - to show how they originate in the operations of the mind, and to what extent they are necessarily identical in all languages. It is not intended to introduce these considerations to the exclusion of the practical rules which operate in immediate connexion with the usage of any language, but rather to explain, so far as possible, the origin of these rules, and thereby afford a more accurate and precise means of examining the analysis of sentences, the nature of words, and their syntactical arrangement. The science of etymology investigates the general principles of the production and successive changes of the elements of which language consists, the laws of their expressiveness whereby they were connected in their original form with the elements of thought, and the laws of their subsequent alterations in utterance and in meaning. The science of grammar investigates the general principles of the structure of language, the causes which have determined the various modes of breaking expression into parts, and of putting the parts together in discourse, that prevail amongst the various races of mankind. As a contribution to the former branch of the science of language, the author of this work hopes to publish, when he has revised it, a classification which he has made of indo-european roots according to the general principles of expressiveness whereby they seem to have conveyed their fundamental meanings. And in the present publica tion he considers the influences which determine varieties of utterance among the various races. Of these, a brief abstract was printed in the Annual Report of the Institution published in the same year. In the following winter (December, 1864, and January, 1865) they were again delivered as one of the regular courses before the Lowell Institute, in Boston, having been expanded into a series of twelve lectures. There are many persons who would be glad to know more about the English language than can be gained from the formal routine of the public schools, who, nevertheless, are unable to procure and read the great number of valuable works on the subject that have issued from the press within a period of fifty years. Such persons are in a position to appreciate a work taking a somewhat wider view than the common text-books, and presenting some of the more familiar results of modern philology.
