Federico Dal Bo examines the design of early Hebrew books from the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, focusing not only on the words in these early books but also on how they were arranged on the page. He follows in the tradition of scholars such as Christopher de Hamel, Marvin J. Heller, and David Stern, who have explored the importance of these Hebrew books in influencing Jewish learning and attracting the interest of Christians. The author discusses important prints, such as the first Talmud and rabbinical bibles, which marked a shift from being for Jewish readers only to being for both Jews and Christians. The collaboration between Jewish editors and Christian printers changed the way these books looked and the audience for whom they were intended. At first, these early prints copied the style of handwritten Hebrew manuscripts. The simple layout could be difficult to read, especially for long books like the Bible or Talmud. But over time, influenced by the humanism of the Italian Renaissance, the layout became more complex. The book also looks at how the layout changed from full-page commentaries to a more complicated design in which the main text and commentaries shared the same page. This shift challenged the idea of who was the primary author and emphasized the role of editors. The layout, with the main text in the center and the commentaries on the sides, created a kind of unwritten rule for how to read religious texts. Dal Bo's study also includes new information about a 1553 trial in which the Talmud was burned. Overall, it explores how the layout of these early Hebrew books shaped cultural power and influenced how people read.

According to Mende, Oehmichen and Schröter (2013), the number of users of the Internet and Web 2.0 applications in Germany literally exploded in the past fifteen years – a growth that is unique in the history of media development. While in 1997 only 7% of the German population used the Internet at least occasionally, we are now able to record 76% onliners in all age groups, and even 99% onliners in the youngest age group (14-29 years of age) (p. 35). When it comes to social networking sites – as an example for Social Web applications – Mende et al. report a rapid development. In 2007, merely 7% of online users said they were present in social networks, only five years later, however, there were 37% of onliners that used social networking sites. In the young age group, over three quarters (76%) of the online users are actively involved in social networks (p. 44), demonstrating that these applications will be of great significance as well in the future. These figures underline the immense expansion of the Social Web and its increasing importance, not only for the users, but also for researchers. So if social media are among, if not the most important mass medium of our time – why not apply classical theories that helped to examine the conventional mass media such as newspapers, radio and TV to the new media? This paper aims to revisit the theory of cultural hegemony and its link to mass media and later on transfer it from this classical frame to a whole new type of media – the social media. Central questions will be: Is the phenomenon of cultural hegemony to be found in the context of social media? Which aspects of the theory can be properly transferred to the new media?

Performing Power illuminates how colonial dominance in Indonesia was legitimized, maintained, negotiated, and contested through the everyday staging and public performance of power between the colonizer and colonized. Arnout Van der Meer's Performing Power explores what seemingly ordinary interactions reveal about the construction of national, racial, social, religious, and gender identities as well as the experience of modernity in colonial Indonesia. Through acts of everyday resistance, such as speaking a different language, withholding deference, and changing one's appearance and consumer behavior, a new generation of Indonesians contested the hegemonic colonial appropriation of local culture and the racial and gender inequalities that it sustained.
