This market research project was undertaken to establish a benchmark for the details of what is reported as print sales. Printers were surveyed on actual printer revenue broken down by print vs. non-print sales. Data was then reviewed to understand industry trends and to frame the impact of non-print against the total expected growth of print.

The aim of this textbook (previously titled SAS for Data Analytics) is to teach the use of SAS for statistical analysis of data for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in statistics, data science, and disciplines involving analyzing data. The book begins with an introduction beyond the basics of SAS, illustrated with non-trivial, real-world, worked examples. It proceeds to SAS programming and applications, SAS graphics, statistical analysis of regression models, analysis of variance models, analysis of variance with random and mixed effects models, and then takes the discussion beyond regression and analysis of variance to conclude. Pedagogically, the authors introduce theory and methodological basis topic by topic, present a problem as an application, followed by a SAS analysis of the data provided and a discussion of results. The text focuses on applied statistical problems and methods. Key features include: end of chapter exercises, downloadable SAS code and data sets, and advanced material suitable for a second course in applied statistics with every method explained using SAS analysis to illustrate a real-world problem. New to this edition: • Covers SAS v9.2 and incorporates new commands • Uses SAS ODS (output delivery system) for reproduction of tables and graphics output • Presents new commands needed to produce ODS output • All chapters rewritten for clarity • New and updated examples throughout • All SAS outputs are new and updated, including graphics • More exercises and problems • Completely new chapter on analysis of nonlinear and generalized linear models • Completely new appendix Mervyn G. Marasinghe, PhD, is Associate Professor Emeritus of Statistics at Iowa State University, where he has taught courses in statistical methods and statistical computing. Kenneth J. Koehler, PhD, is University Professor of Statistics at Iowa State University, where he teaches courses in statistical methodology at both graduate and undergraduate levels and primarily uses SAS to supplement his teaching.

Look at Python from a data science point of view and learn proven techniques for data visualization as used in making critical business decisions. Starting with an introduction to data science with Python, you will take a closer look at the Python environment and get acquainted with editors such as Jupyter Notebook and Spyder. After going through a primer on Python programming, you will grasp fundamental Python programming techniques used in data science. Moving on to data visualization, you will see how it caters to modern business needs and forms a key factor in decision-making. You will also take a look at some popular data visualization libraries in Python. Shifting focus to data structures, you will learn the various aspects of data structures from a data science perspective. You will then work with file I/O and regular expressions in Python, followed by gathering and cleaning data. Moving on to exploring and analyzing data, you will look at advanced data structures in Python. Then, you will take a deep dive into data visualization techniques, going through a number of plotting systems in Python. In conclusion, you will complete a detailed case study, where you’ll get a chance to revisit the concepts you’ve covered so far. What You Will LearnUse Python programming techniques for data science Master data collections in Python Create engaging visualizations for BI systems Deploy effective strategies for gathering and cleaning data Integrate the Seaborn and Matplotlib plotting systems Who This Book Is For Developers with basic Python programming knowledge looking to adopt key strategies for data analysis and visualizations using Python.

"In an age of big data, data journalism and with a wealth of quantitative information around us, it is not enough for students to be taught only 100 year old statistical methods using ′out of the box′ software. They need to have 21st-century analytical skills too. This is an excellent and student-friendly text from two of the world leaders in the teaching and development of spatial analysis. It shows clearly why the open source software R is not just an alternative to commercial GIS, it may actually be the better choice for mapping, analysis and for replicable research. Providing practical tips as well as fully working code, this is a practical ′how to′ guide ideal for undergraduates as well as those using R for the first time. It will be required reading on my own courses." - Richard Harris, Professor of Quantitative Social Science, University of Bristol R is a powerful open source computing tool that supports geographical analysis and mapping for the many geography and ‘non-geography’ students and researchers interested in spatial analysis and mapping. This book provides an introduction to the use of R for spatial statistical analysis, geocomputation and the analysis of geographical information for researchers collecting and using data with location attached, largely through increased GPS functionality. Brunsdon and Comber take readers from ‘zero to hero’ in spatial analysis and mapping through functions they have developed and compiled into R packages. This enables practical R applications in GIS, spatial analyses, spatial statistics, mapping, and web-scraping. Each chapter includes: Example data and commands for exploring it Scripts and coding to exemplify specific functionality Advice for developing greater understanding - through functions such as locator(), View(), and alternative coding to achieve the same ends Self-contained exercises for students to work through Embedded code within the descriptive text. This is a definitive ′how to′ that takes students - of any discipline - from coding to actual applications and uses of R.

We study whether the introduction of e-readers, most notably the launch of Amazon Kindle in late 2007, led to a reduction in print book sales. To estimate the impact, we exploit the quasi-experimental variation in how digital books are expected to affect print book sales in different genres or sub-genres such as fiction, non-fiction, juvenile or religion. We employ a difference-in-differences identification strategy and use print sales data on almost the entire population of book titles published in the United States between 2004-15 across a variety of genres. We find that, on an average, print sales of adult fiction books (the most popular genre in the e-book format) decreased by about 30% due to the introduction of digital readers. We also find that the effect is stronger for paperback version and less popular books.

Introductory statistics textbook with a focus on data science topics such as prediction, correlation, and data exploration Statistics for Data Science and Analytics is a comprehensive guide to statistical analysis using Python, presenting important topics useful for data science such as prediction, correlation, and data exploration. The authors provide an introduction to statistical science and big data, as well as an overview of Python data structures and operations. A range of statistical techniques are presented with their implementation in Python, including hypothesis testing, probability, exploratory data analysis, categorical variables, surveys and sampling, A/B testing, and correlation. The text introduces binary classification, a foundational element of machine learning, validation of statistical models by applying them to holdout data, and probability and inference via the easy-to-understand method of resampling and the bootstrap instead of using a myriad of “kitchen sink” formulas. Regression is taught both as a tool for explanation and for prediction. This book is informed by the authors’ experience designing and teaching both introductory statistics and machine learning at Statistics.com. Each chapter includes practical examples, explanations of the underlying concepts, and Python code snippets to help readers apply the techniques themselves. Statistics for Data Science and Analytics includes information on sample topics such as: Int, float, and string data types, numerical operations, manipulating strings, converting data types, and advanced data structures like lists, dictionaries, and sets Experiment design via randomizing, blinding, and before-after pairing, as well as proportions and percents when handling binary data Specialized Python packages like numpy, scipy, pandas, scikit-learn and statsmodels—the workhorses of data science—and how to get the most value from them Statistical versus practical significance, random number generators, functions for code reuse, and binomial and normal probability distributions Written by and for data science instructors, Statistics for Data Science and Analytics is an excellent learning resource for data science instructors prescribing a required intro stats course for their programs, as well as other students and professionals seeking to transition to the data science field.
