A “gripping, emotionally charged” account of a brutal crime committed by escaped prisoners from an Edgar Award–winning author (Los Angeles Times Book Review). In 1973, six members of the Alday family were brutally murdered in their home in Donalsonville, Georgia, by fugitives who escaped from a Maryland prison and broke in to the Alday’s house. Two of the escapees were brothers, and they picked up another one of their siblings, only fifteen years old, along the way. The governor at the time—future president Jimmy Carter—called it “the most heinous crime in Georgia.” This true account looks at the entire story: not only the unspeakable massacre and its aftermath, but the horrifying backstories and motives of the various perpetrators—one of whom would finally be executed thirty years later.

The book, TEARS AS OF BLOOD is an imaginative collection of prose and poetry that lays before the reader the innermost thoughts and emotional life of a man thirty-plus years in prison. The book relates the history of Nevada State Prison in the first quarter of 2006 when a new get "tough Warden" was assigned in the previously quiet and safe prison that now turned into a place of violence and murder. Nyberg wrote: "At suppertime at Unit Ten prisoner stopped by Unit Six and told the officer that a dead man was in the unit 10 C-tier shower." The murderers imprisoned at Nevada State Prison had never celebrated death with the zeal that their "betters" (the administration) did. Nyberg further wrote: "On nights of an execution we prisoners were locked in our cells immediately following the evening meal. While we were locked down, the administration officials and distinguished guests were having a party with the buffet set up in the school area." The author reminds us: "It is not what you think that defined you - it is what you do with those thoughts. The madman's dreams are also the dreams of the poet." As he now finishes his 45th year in prison the author expresses his greatest fear: "I am facing the greatest fear of old lifers-to grow old and alone in prison."

PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • The definitive history of the infamous 1971 Attica Prison uprising, the state's violent response, and the victim's decades-long quest for justice. “Gripping ... deals with racial conflict, mass incarceration, police brutality and dissembling politicians ... Makes us understand why this one group of prisoners [rebelled], and how many others shared the cost.” —The New York Times On September 9, 1971, nearly 1,300 prisoners took over the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York to protest years of mistreatment. Holding guards and civilian employees hostage, the prisoners negotiated with officials for improved conditions during the four long days and nights that followed. On September 13, the state abruptly sent hundreds of heavily armed troopers and correction officers to retake the prison by force. Their gunfire killed thirty-nine men—hostages as well as prisoners—and severely wounded more than one hundred others. In the ensuing hours, weeks, and months, troopers and officers brutally retaliated against the prisoners. And, ultimately, New York State authorities prosecuted only the prisoners, never once bringing charges against the officials involved in the retaking and its aftermath and neglecting to provide support to the survivors and the families of the men who had been killed. Drawing from more than a decade of extensive research, historian Heather Ann Thompson sheds new light on every aspect of the uprising and its legacy, giving voice to all those who took part in this forty-five-year fight for justice: prisoners, former hostages, families of the victims, lawyers and judges, and state officials and members of law enforcement. Blood in the Water is the searing and indelible account of one of the most important civil rights stories of the last century. (With black-and-white photos throughout)

'Wonderful. Told with style, pace, character, texture, and tension’ - Lee Child 1815: The war is over but for the inmates at Dartmoor Prison, peace - like home - is still a long way away. On the eve of the year 1815, the captured sailors of the Eagle arrive at Dartmoor prison; bedraggled, exhausted, sustained only by a rumour heard along the way. Joe Hill thought he’d left the conflict behind but it is clear there is a different type of battle here. As he announces the news of the end of the war, the guards bristle and the inmates stir. The powder keg was fixed to blow and Joe has just lit the fuse. Elizabeth Shortland, the Governor’s wife, looks out at the unsettled crowd. The peace means the end is near, that she needn’t be here for ever. But suddenly, she cannot bear the thought of leaving. Inspired by true events, Mad Blood Stirring is a story of hope and freedom, of loss and suffering. It is a story about how sometimes, in our darkest hour, it can be the most unlikely of things that see us through. ________ 'Wonderful - a story I never heard before, told with style, pace, character, texture, and tension ... bliss.' Lee Child 'Bristling with energy, written with passion, Mad Blood Stirring is a joy to read.' John Boyne
