This is a full and authoritative account of the history of private banking, beginning with its development in conjunction with the world markets served by and centred on a few European cities, notably Amsterdam and London. These banks were usually partnerships, a form of organization which persisted as the role of private banking changed in response to the political and economic transformations of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was in this period, and the succeeding Golden Age of private banking from 1815 to the 1870s, that many of the great names this book treats rose to fame: Baring, Rothschild, Mallet and Hottinger became synonymous with wealth and economic power, as German, French and the remarkably long-lasting Geneva banks flourished and expanded. The last parts of this study detail the way in which private banking adapted to the age of the corporate economy from the 1870s to the 1930s, the decline during and after the Great Depression and the post-war renaissance. It concludes with an appraisal of the causes and consequences of the modern expansion of private banking: no longer the exclusive preserve of partnerships, the management of investment portfolios of wealthy individuals and institutions is now a major concern of international joint-stock banks.

According to the World Health Report published by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch, the number of High Networth Individuals (HNIs) (with assets greater than $1 million) has grown by over 20% globally in the past five years and by more than 90% in the past decade. The report also highlights that the emerging market economies like India, China and the Middle East have outperformed the developed economies in terms of increase in the number of HNIs. The number of dollar millionaires in India has grown to 83500 in 2005. These emerging "newly rich" individuals lack the time to manage their serious money and will increasingly delegate it to professional wealth managers. This has stimulated the private banking business in India, attracting the attention of global majors like UBS and Credit Suisse. Private banking is the means of managing private clients' money by providing various services like efficient wealth management, saving, inheritance and tax planning. These banks promise to maximise returns and minimise risk along with the tax burden of the clients through careful allocation of their money. Against this backdrop, this book seeks to focus on the emerging opportunities for private banking in India. It highlights the factors driving the growth of private banking in the country and the region, debates the sustainability of domestic and foreign private banks ad analyses the performance of private banks.

Swiss private banking in either form is not for everyone: on average a Swiss private bank will require a minimum asset value of between 500,000 and 1 million Swiss Francs (although in some cases certain private banks will also accept affluent clients with a 'mere' 100,000 Swiss Francs to start with). Yet despite this restriction, it is not necessary to have any particular sum of money at your disposal to apply some of the good Swiss private-banking principles on your own. The Portable Private Banker has been written to help you do this, and that does not mean firing your advisors and using your money to buy and sell through daily trades on the stock exchange. In fact, quite the opposite. As the majority of private banks will today manage your assets through an investment in so-called Best in Class funds and ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds), this book adopts the same private-banking approach in managing your wealth: with funds and ETFs. The Portable Private Banker is used as a textbook for the Money Management class within the University of Cumbria MBA at Robert Kennedy College, Zurich, Switzerland.

This book engages the reader around different perspectives between forecasting and foresight in strategic design, drawing insights derived from a futures study that can be applied in form of a design-inspired foresight approach for designers and interdisciplinary innovation teams increasingly called upon to help envisage preferable futures. Demonstrating this process in applied research, the book describes a 2016 Financial Services industry futures study to the year 2030. An industry increasingly at risk in dealing with uncertainty, the Financial Services sector, is a core pillar of economic activity in most markets, such as greater China, and inherent within are major drivers of change linked to consumer behaviors, new technology and disruptive business models. While the financial services industry exemplifies an ideal case for design-inspired foresight, the aims of this book are primarily to establish the peculiarities between traditional forecasting applications and a design-inspired foresight visioning approach as strategic design activities for selecting preferable futures. Underlining the contribution of this book is the value of design futures thinking as a creative and divergent thought process, which has the potential to respond to the much broader organizational reforms needed to sustain in today’s rapidly evolving business environment.
