De las exposiciones auspiciadas por Absolut Vodka al uso del autorretrato de Van Gogh por parte de ABN-AMOR para publicitar sus tarjetas de crédito, hemos sido testigos de un nuevo tipo de patronazgo en el que la unión del talento individual y el marketing multinacional está comenzando a difuminar las viejas y cómodas distinciones entre lo público y lo privado. El presente libro constituye un ambicioso intento de detallar las vías por las que los valores mercantiles y el ethos del libre mercado han permeado la esfera de las artes visuales desde la década de 1980. Al hilo de la cartografía de los diversos deslizamientos en la política pública que facilitaron por primera vez la entrada de grandes corporaciones en el ámbito cultural, Chin-tao Wu analiza el papel de los gobiernos a la hora de inocular los principios del libre mercado en las instituciones públicas encargadas de la gestión del mundo del arte, en particular el Arts Council en Gran Bretaña y el National Endowment for the Arts en Estados Unidos. Analizará el asalto empresarial a los museos, los caminos seguidos por las «elites» sociales y mercantiles y cómo estas compañías han logrado integrarse en la infraestructura del mundo artístico convirtiendo sus edificios en exposiciones de arte. This comparative study examines the strategies of re-politicization and socialization employed in contemporary Argentine film and theatre produced in the wake of the 1976-83 dictatorship. It focuses on the socio-political facets of performance across a range of films and dramatic compositions. The book highlights the manner in which the trope of performance represents the place in which film and theatre experiment with generic and mediatic hybridization. Each chapter takes as its point of departure a series of politically motivated appropriations made by cinema and theatre from neighboring genres/media. In each case, genre is shown to take on the role of mediator between competing aesthetic forms: between aesthetics and politics; aesthetic performance and social performance; reality and fiction; postmodern heterogeneity and an increasingly present modern anxiety regarding the perceived need to preserveartistic purity/autonomy, thus restoring what is specific to theatre and cinema's type of communication. Philippa Page has managed the cultural programme at the Maison de l'Argentine in the Cité Internationale Universitaire, Paris and continues to research in the field of Argentine performance studies.
