Organizations big and small have started to realize just how crucial system and application reliability is to their business. Theyâ??ve also learned just how difficult it is to maintain that reliability while iterating at the speed demanded by the marketplace. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is a proven approach to this challenge. SRE is a large and rich topic to discuss. Google led the way with Site Reliability Engineering, the wildly successful Oâ??Reilly book that described Googleâ??s creation of the discipline and the implementation thatâ??s allowed them to operate at a planetary scale. Inspired by that earlier work, this book explores a very different part of the SRE space. The more than two dozen chapters in Seeking SRE bring you into some of the important conversations going on in the SRE world right now. Listen as engineers and other leaders in the field discuss: Different ways of implementing SRE and SRE principles in a wide variety of settings How SRE relates to other approaches such as DevOps Specialties on the cutting edge that will soon be commonplace in SRE Best practices and technologies that make practicing SRE easier The important but rarely explored human side of SRE David N. Blank-Edelman is the bookâ??s curator and editor.

The Economics Of Special Privilege And Rent Seeking written by Gordon Tullock and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-08-31 with Business & Economics categories.
As the reader of this book probably already knows, I have devoted a great deal of time to the topic which is, rather unfortunately, named rent seeking. Rent seeking, the use of resources in actually lowering total product although benefiting some minority, is, unfortunately, a major activity of most governments. As a result of this, I have stumbled on a puzzle. The rent-seeking activity found in major societies is immense, but the industry devoted to producing it is nowhere near as immense. In Washington the rent-seeking industry is a very conspicuous part of the landscape. On the other hand, if you consider how much money is being moved by that industry, then it is comparatively small. The first question that this book seeks to answer is: How do we account for the disparity? A second problem is that almost all rent seeking is done in what superficially appears to be an extremely inefficient way. I recently got estimates of the net cost to the public of the farm program and its net benefit to the farmers. The first is many times the second. Indeed, it is not at all obvious that in the long run, today's farmers are better off than they would be if the program had never been implemented. Of course, in any given year, cancelling the program would be quite painful. The first section of this book, then, is devoted to this problem.

Help Seeking In Academic Settings written by Stuart A. Karabenick and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-11 with Education categories.
Building on Karabenick’s earlier volume on this topic and maintaining its high standards of scholarship and intellectual rigor, Help Seeking in Academic Settings: Goals, Groups, and Contexts brings together contemporary work that is theoretically as well as practically important. It highlights current trends in the area and gives expanded attention to applications to teaching and learning. The contributors represent an internationally recognized group of scholars and researchers who provide depth of analysis and breadth of coverage. Help seeking is currently considered an important learning strategy that is linked to students’ achievement goals and academic performance. This volume not only provides answers to who, why, and when learners seek help, but raises questions for readers to consider for future research. Chapters examine: *help seeking as a self-regulated learning strategy and its relationship to achievement goal theory; *help seeking in collaborative groups; *culture and help seeking in K-12 and college contexts; *help seeking and academic support services (such as academic advising centers); *help seeking in computer-based interactive learning environments; *help seeking in response to peer harassment at school; and *help seeking in non-academic settings such as the workplace. This book is intended for researchers, academic support personnel, and graduate students across the field of educational psychology, particularly those interested in student motivation and self-regulation.

The Alignment Problem Machine Learning And Human Values written by Brian Christian and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-06 with Science categories.
"If you’re going to read one book on artificial intelligence, this is the one." —Stephen Marche, New York Times A jaw-dropping exploration of everything that goes wrong when we build AI systems and the movement to fix them. Today’s “machine-learning” systems, trained by data, are so effective that we’ve invited them to see and hear for us—and to make decisions on our behalf. But alarm bells are ringing. Recent years have seen an eruption of concern as the field of machine learning advances. When the systems we attempt to teach will not, in the end, do what we want or what we expect, ethical and potentially existential risks emerge. Researchers call this the alignment problem. Systems cull résumés until, years later, we discover that they have inherent gender biases. Algorithms decide bail and parole—and appear to assess Black and White defendants differently. We can no longer assume that our mortgage application, or even our medical tests, will be seen by human eyes. And as autonomous vehicles share our streets, we are increasingly putting our lives in their hands. The mathematical and computational models driving these changes range in complexity from something that can fit on a spreadsheet to a complex system that might credibly be called “artificial intelligence.” They are steadily replacing both human judgment and explicitly programmed software. In best-selling author Brian Christian’s riveting account, we meet the alignment problem’s “first-responders,” and learn their ambitious plan to solve it before our hands are completely off the wheel. In a masterful blend of history and on-the ground reporting, Christian traces the explosive growth in the field of machine learning and surveys its current, sprawling frontier. Readers encounter a discipline finding its legs amid exhilarating and sometimes terrifying progress. Whether they—and we—succeed or fail in solving the alignment problem will be a defining human story. The Alignment Problem offers an unflinching reckoning with humanity’s biases and blind spots, our own unstated assumptions and often contradictory goals. A dazzlingly interdisciplinary work, it takes a hard look not only at our technology but at our culture—and finds a story by turns harrowing and hopeful.
