This book provides a theory, a formal language, and a practical methodology for the specification, use, and reuse of problem-solving methods. The framework developed by the author characterizes knowledge-based systems as a particular type of software architecture where the applications are developed by integrating generic task specifications, problem solving methods, and domain models: this approach turns knowledge engineering into a software engineering discipline. All in all, this work, as an applicable theory of knowledge engineering, consolidates research work done during several decades. The present popularity of Internet-based services will provide unprecedented opportunities for deploying and sharing knowledge-based services and anybody wanting to participate in this area can learn from this book what knowledge engineering is about.

Thus, we need to engage in constant problem-solving in our daily lives. This book reviews strategies, challenges and outcomes of problem-solving. Chapter One discusses computational thinking and fuzzy logic in problem solving. Chapter Two reviews digital technologies and mathematical problem solving. Chapter Three deals with the concept of Einstellung effect a psychological phenomenon evinced by problem solvers through a tendency (mind set) to use previously learned workable strategy in situations that either can be resolved more efficiently or to which the strategy is not applicable at all. Chapter Four gives an overview of the research on the use of narrative Context Rich Problems (CRP) in physics education at the upper secondary and higher education levels. Chapter Five examines teaching and assessing story problems. Chapter Six assesses the interpersonal problem-solving process. Chapter Seven discusses validations and outcomes of a multi-dimensional scale to measure strategies for solving personal problems. In Chapter Eight, the ability for solving problems in our day-to-day lives, called social problem-solving is addressed. Sharpening Everyday Mental Thinking Skills Through Mathematics Problem Solving And Beyond written by Alfred S Posamentier and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-22 with Mathematics categories.

Mathematics is a subject taught from kindergarten through to high school, and yet it is the one subject that most adults are almost proud to admit to not having been very good at, and, therefore, tend to avoid it where they can. However, one of the key factors in mathematics is its ability to enable us to solve everyday problems. When we consider 'the worst-case scenario' of the situation, it is analogous to solving a mathematical problem by considering extremes. Or, we might consider the best path to take from point A to point B, where geometric relationships can be helpful. This book is intended to demonstrate a variety of neglected aspects of mathematics, in order to demonstrate the power and beauty of the field of mathematics beyond where most people, students, and teachers believe is possible. The chapters of the book explore a multitude of topics: unusual arithmetic calculations and shortcuts, entertaining and instructional problem-solving strategies, unusual applications of algebra, and how geometry allows us to better appreciate physical relationships. Only a basic mathematical knowledge is needed to understand these topics and problems; however, the book also demonstrates that, armed with even this level of understanding, our mathematical skills far exceed what we learned at school! The final chapter is the most challenging, and explores a curious problem-solving technique.
