Für die Differenzierung der Äquivalente in einem deutsch-englischen Wörterbuch, das zur Produktion in der Fremdsprache dient, spielen verschiedene Faktoren eine wichtige Rolle. Dazu zählen die Benutzungssituation, der Benutzer und auch die Äquivalenzbeziehungen zwischen den einzelnen Lexemen. Im theoretischen Teil der Studie werden daher eine benutzerfreundliche Wörterbuchtypologie, zwei Äquivalenzmodelle und Kombinationsmechanismen vorgestellt, die beim Vergleich zweier Sprachen von großer Wichtigkeit sind. Gerade bei komplexen Äquivalenzbeziehungen zwischen den Lexemen zweier Sprachen, wie sie z.T. bei bestimmten Verben und Adjektiven auftreten, ist die Differenzierung von Äquivalenten für den Wörterbuchbenutzer essentiell. Nur eine ausreichende Differenzierung versetzt ihn in die Lage, das richtige Äquivalent zu finden. Im praktisch orientierten Teil der Studie werden eine qualitative und eine quantitative Analyse der vorherrschenden Differenzierungspraxis in einigen zweisprachigen Wörterbüchern durchgeführt. Ergebnis ist, dass im Bereich der Differenzierungsangaben, insbesondere bei Angaben zu Kombinationsmöglichkeiten, Verbesserungsbedarf besteht. Zum Abschluss werden einige beispielhafte Wörterbuchartikel vorgestellt, die Wege zu einer benutzerfreundlicheren Darstellung der Differenzierung aufzeigen.

The auxiliary do (tun) is one of the most-discussed constructions in West Germanic. In German, there is a striking opposition between modern standard German, where the construction is virtually ungrammatical and considered to be "sub-standard" by most speakers, whilst, as this book shows, the construction is attested in all modern dialects as well as historic stages since 1350. In answering why auxiliary tun is ungrammatical in modern standard German, it is shown that the stigmatization of tun was caused by prescriptive grammarians in the 16th-18th century. Furthermore it is shown that the stigmatization of tun as "bad" German occurred in clearly discernible stages, from bad poetry (1550-1680), to bad written German (1680-1740) and finally to "bad" German in general (after 1740), thus providing evidence that the history of the standardization of German needs to take into account direct metalinguistic comments from prescriptive grammarians. The effectiveness of linguistic purism is also shown by evidence from two other constructions, namely polynegation and double perfect.

Imagining Far-right Terrorism explores far-right terrorism as an object of the narrative imagination in contemporary Western Europe. Western European societies are generally reluctant to think of far-right and racist violence as terrorism, but the reasons for this remain little understood. This book focuses on the extraordinarily complex case of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) in Germany, and high-profile instances of racist violence in Sweden and Norway. The author analyses the narratives surrounding far-right and racist violence, drawing on a broad range of empirical sources.
