Excerpt from Rural Problems of Today Rural life has as many sides as there are human interests. This book looks out upon country-fife conditions from a viewpoint comparatively neglected. It attempts to approach rural social life from the psychological angle. The pur pose oi the book forces it from the Well beaten pathways, but this effort to give emphasis to the mental side of rural problems is not an attempt to discount the other significant aspects of the rural environment. The field of rural service is large enough to contain all Who desire by serious study to advance at some point the happiness, prosperity, and Whole someness that belong by social right to those Who live and work in the country. Excerpt from The English Village: A Literary Study; 1750-1850 But the English village has a very great deal to do with the war. For remote as the sleepy stillness of village life is, in ordinary times, from the hurry of active affairs, there is not one among the most distant and old-world of English villages but has been stirred out of its quiet by the great war. The villagers of England have been swept into the mid-current of national life by the events of the past four years. They have taken a Splendid part in the great struggle, and their interests and concerns have m turn become m a new sense those of all England. For a century and a half certain great problems of village life have been growing in seriousness, and pressing with more and more insistence for attention and solution. It is inconceivable that after the war these problems should continue long unsolved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Excerpt from Introduction to Rural Sociology The practical value of modern attempts to reduce the laws of social organization to a scientific basis has been so thor oughly demonstrated that it no longer needs discussion. Inter est in problems of social organization and effort to understand and solve them have continued to increase as recognition of the value of such effort has grown. Such applied problems as those of the causes and relief of poverty, the adjustment of labor conditions, the equitable distribution of wealth, the social control of the growth of cities and the administration of ai fairs oi state in the larger units, have long received attention. The more recent interest in problems of rural and village life is but an expression of the broadening social point of view, and of the recognition of the fact that human society is, so far as the modern world is concerned, a unity, and that an under standing of rural problems is not only necessary for the sake of the country community but is also necessary as a basis for the explanation of many urban social problems. Our Village Homes written by Hugh Aronson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-04 with Business & Economics categories.

Excerpt from Our Village Homes: Present Conditions Suggested Remedies The problem of Rural Housing is one to which it is necessary that we should give immediate attention. While governments are legislating for the clamorous urban voter, the less articulate countryman has hitherto been neglected. Now when the question is recognised as national, it is very necessary to approach it with knowledge and to avoid the common error that the Housing Problem is merely a question of wages. Early in the Nineteenth Century the agricultural labourer lost most of his valuable common rights, and with them went all hope of an independent existence. In all the years that have passed since then, he has had little incentive to remain on the land. None of the palliatives that have from time to time lightened his load, have prevented his emigration to the town or the colonies. To-day his urgent need is a secure home where he can live and rear his children in decency. This is just what, under present conditions, he cannot have. The cry from our villages is always the same insufficient cottages and bad accommodation. The present Housing Acts are a step in the right direction. They would indeed be not inadequate had they a real driving power behind them. Housing Commissioners furnished with a grant from the Treasury to assist and encourage Local Authorities would provide such a power. Excerpt from Village Life in China: A Study in Sociology China was never so much in the world's thought as to-day, nor is there any apparent likelihood that the position of this empire will be less conspicuous at the opening of the twentieth century: Whatever helps to a better understanding of the Chinese people, is an aid to a. Identity Crises And Indigenous Religious Traditions written by Elijah Obinna and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-10 with Religion categories.

This book highlights the complex identity crises among many Christians as they negotiate their new identities, religious ideas and convictions as both Christians and members of Nigerian-African societies of indigenous religious traditions and identities. Through an interdisciplinary interpretation of religious practices and educational issues in teaching and ritual training, the author provides tools to help analyse empirical cases. These include the negotiation processes among Christians, with focus on the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN) and members of the Ogo society within the Amasiri, Afikpo North Local Government Area, Ebonyi state, in South-eastern Nigeria. Identifying the power dynamic, identity, role and influence of indigenous religions on Christians and the Ogo society, this book reveals the limited interactions between many Christians and members of the Ogo society. Questions explored include: what makes the Ogo society an integral part of the socio-religious life of Amasiri and what powers and identity does it confer on the initiates; how is the PCN within Amasiri responding to the Ogo society through its religious practices such as baptism, confirmation, local auxiliary ministries and organisational structure; and how does the understanding and application of conversion within the PCN impact on its members’ response to the Ogo society? Demonstrating how complex religious identities and practices of Nigerian-African Christians can balance mission-influenced Christianity with indigenous religious traditions and identities, this book recognises the importance of appropriating the powers of indigenous cultures, ingenuity and creativity in the construction and preservation of community identities. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Christian theology, indigenous religious practice and African lived religion.
