As multimedia-enabled mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets are becoming the day-to-day computing device of choice for users of all ages, everyone expects that all mobile multimedia applications and services should be as smooth and as high-quality as the desktop experience. The grand challenge in delivering multimedia to mobile devices using the Internet is to ensure the quality of experience that meets the users' expectations, within reasonable costs, while supporting heterogeneous platforms and wireless network conditions. This thesis focuses on the problem of optimizing the quality of network multimedia services. This problem spans multiple domains, from subjective perception of multimedia quality to computer networks management. The work done in this thesis approaches the problem at different levels, developing methods for modeling the subjective perception of quality based on objectively measurable parameters of the multimedia coding process as well as the transport over computer networks. The modeling of subjective perception is motivated by work done in psychophysics, while using Machine Learning techniques to map network conditions to the human perception of video services. Furthermore, the work develops models for efficient control of multimedia systems operating in dynamic networked environments with the goal of delivering optimized Quality of Experience. Overall this thesis delivers a set of methods for monitoring and optimizing the quality of multimedia services that adapt to the dynamic environment of computer networks in which they operate.

With nearly 7 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide, mobility and computing have become pervasive in our society and business. Moreover, new mobile multimedia communication services are challenging telecommunication operators. To support the significant increase in multimedia traffic—especially video—over wireless networks, new technological infrastructure must be created. Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) are widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies for future wireless communications. This book explains how to efficiently deliver video, audio, and other data over CRNs. Covering advanced algorithms, protocols, and hardware-/software-based experiments, this book describes how to encode video in a prioritized way to send to dynamic radio links. It discusses different FEC codes for video reliability and explains how different machine learning algorithms can be used for video quality control. It also explains how to use readily available software tools to build a CRN simulation model. This book explains both theoretical and experimental designs. Our lives depend on automotive cybersecurity, protecting us inside and near vehicles. If vehicles go rogue, they can operate against the driver’s will and potentially drive off a cliff or into a crowd. The “Automotive Security Analyzer for Exploitability Risks” (AutoSAlfER) evaluates the exploitability risks of automotive on-board networks by attack graphs. AutoSAlfER’s Multi-Path Attack Graph algorithm is 40 to 200 times smaller in RAM and 200 to 5 000 times faster than a comparable implementation using Bayesian networks, and the Single-Path Attack Graph algorithm constructs the most reasonable attack path per asset with a computational, asymptotic complexity of only O(n * log(n)), instead of O(n2). AutoSAlfER runs on a self-written graph database, heuristics, pruning, and homogenized Gaussian distributions and boosts people’s productivity for a more sustainable and secure automotive on-board network. Ultimately, we enjoy more safety and security in and around autonomous, connected, electrified, and shared vehicles.
