1989 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Danish mathematician Hieronymus George Zeuthen. Zeuthen's name is known to every algebraic geometer because of his discovery of a basic invariant of surfaces. However, he also did fundamental research in intersection theory, enumerative geometry, and the projective geometry of curves and surfaces. Zeuthen's extraordinary devotion to his subject, his characteristic depth, thoroughness, and clarity of thought, and his precise and succinct writing style are truly inspiring. During the past ten years or so, algebraic geometers have reexamined Zeuthen's work, drawing from it inspiration and new directions for development in the field. The 1989 Zeuthen Symposium, held in the summer of 1989 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Copenhagen, provided a historic opportunity for mathematicians to gather and examine those areas in contemporary mathematical research which have evolved from Zeuthen's fruitful ideas. This volume, containing papers presented during the symposium, as well as others inspired by it, illuminates some currently active areas of research in enumerative algebraic geometry.

This volume presents the proceedings of a conference on Harmonic Analysis and Number Theory held at McGill University (Montreal) in April 1996. The papers are dedicated to the memory of Carl Herz, who had deep interests in both harmonic analysis and number theory. These two disciplines have a symbiotic relationship that is reflected in the papers in this book.

Stochastic Models written by Donald Andrew Dawson and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Mathematics categories.
This book presents the refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Stochastic Models held in Ottawa (ON, Canada) in honor of Professor Donald A. Dawson. Contributions to the volume were written by students and colleagues of Professor Dawson, many of whom are eminent researchers in their own right. A main theme of the book is the development and study of the Dawson-Watanabe "superprocess", a fundamental building block in modelling interaction particle systems undergoing reproduction and movement. The volume also contains an excellent review article by Professor Dawson and a complete list of his work. This comprehensive work offers a wide assortment of articles on Markov processes, branching processes, mathematical finance, filtering, queueing networks, time series, and statistics. It should be of interest to a broad mathematical audience.

The Ring Theory Conference, held a the University of Miskolc, Hungary, successfully accomplished its two goals: to reflect contemporary trends in the subject area; and to offer a meeting place for a large number of Eastern European algebraists and their colleagues from around the world. Particular emphasis was placed on recent developments in the following four areas: representation theory, group algebras, PI algebras and general ring theory. This book presents 13 of the invited lectures.

Two central aspects of Cartan's approach to differential geometry are the theory of exterior differential systems (EDS) and the method of moving frames. This book presents thorough and modern treatments of both subjects, including their applications to both classic and contemporary problems in geometry. It begins with the classical differential geometry of surfaces and basic Riemannian geometry in the language of moving frames, along with an elementary introduction to exterior differential systems. Key concepts are developed incrementally, with motivating examples leading to definitions, theorems, and proofs. Once the basics of the methods are established, the authors develop applications and advanced topics. One notable application is to complex algebraic geometry, where they expand and update important results from projective differential geometry. As well, the book features an introduction to G-structures and a treatment of the theory of connections. The techniques of EDS are also applied to obtain explicit solutions of PDEs via Darboux's method, the method of characteristics, and Cartan's method of equivalence. This text is suitable for a one-year graduate course in differential geometry, and parts of it can be used for a one-semester course. It has numerous exercises and examples throughout. It will also be useful to experts in areas such as geometry of PDE systems and complex algebraic geometry who want to learn how moving frames and exterior differential systems apply to their fields. The second edition features three new chapters: on Riemannian geometry, emphasizing the use of representation theory; on the latest developments in the study of Darboux-integrable systems; and on conformal geometry, written in a manner to introduce readers to the related parabolic geometry perspective.

The 14 selected papers discuss recent thinking and findings on the representation theory of algebras and its interaction with other areas of mathematics such as algebraic geometry, ring theory, and the representation of groups. The topics include coils and multicoil algebras, representations of wild quivers, the Tits form of a tame algebra, almost split sequences and triangles for Artin algebras and orders, and using approximations to analyze the structure of representations.
