Significant progress has been made in the development of neural prostheses to restore human functions and improve the quality of human life. Biomedical engineers and neuroscientists around the world are working to improve design and performance of existing devices and to develop novel devices for artificial vision, artificial limbs, and brain–machine interfaces. This book, Implantable Neural Prostheses 1: Devices and Applications, ispart one of a two-book series and describes state-of-the-art advances in techniques associated with implantable neural prosthetic devices and their applications. Devices covered include sensory prosthetic devices, such as visual implants, cochlear implants, auditory midbrain implants, and spinal cord stimulators. Motor prosthetic devices, such as deep brain stimulators, Bion microstimu- tors, the brain control and sensing interface, and cardiac electro-stimulation devices are also included. Progress in magnetic stimulation that may offer a non-invasive approach to prosthetic devices is introduced. Regulatory approval of implantable medical devices in the United States and Europe is also discussed.

This volume includes papers presented at the Sixth Annual Computational Neurosci ence meeting (CNS*97) held in Big Sky, Montana, July 6-10, 1997. This collection includes 103 of the 196 papers presented at the meeting. Acceptance for meeting presentation was based on the peer review of preliminary papers originally submitted in January of 1997. The papers in this volume represent final versions of this work submitted in January of 1998. Taken together they provide a cross section of computational neuroscience and represent well the continued vitality and growth of this field. The meeting in Montana was unusual in several respects. First, to our knowledge it was the first international scientific meeting with opening ceremonies on horseback. Second, after five days of rigorous scientific discussion and debate, meeting participants were able to resolve all remaining conflicts in barrel race competitions. Otherwise the magnificence of Montana and the Big Sky Ski Resort assured that the meeting will not soon be forgotten. Scientifically, this volume once again represents the remarkable breadth of subjects that can be approached with computational tools. This volume and the continuing CNS meet ings make it clear that there is almost no subject or area of modem neuroscience research that is not appropriate for computational studies.

Computer-aided design (CAD) plays a key role in improving biomedical systems for various applications. It also helps in the detection, identification, predication, analysis, and classification of diseases, in the management of chronic conditions, and in the delivery of health services. This book discusses the uses of CAD to solve real-world problems and challenges in biomedical systems with the help of appropriate case studies and research simulation results. Aiming to overcome the gap between CAD and biomedical science, it describes behaviors, concepts, fundamentals, principles, case studies, and future directions for research, including the automatic identification of related disorders using CAD. Features: Proposes CAD for the study of biomedical signals to understand physiology and to improve healthcare systems’ ability to diagnose and identify health disorders. Presents concepts of CAD for biomedical modalities in different disorders. Discusses design and simulation examples, issues, and challenges. Illustrates bio-potential signals and their appropriate use in studying different disorders. Includes case studies, practical examples, and research directions. Computer-Aided Design and Diagnosis Methods for Biometrical Applications is aimed at researchers, graduate students in biomedical engineering, image processing, biomedical technology, medical imaging, and health informatics.

It is with great pleasure that we present to you a collection of over 200 high quality technical papers from more than 10 countries that were presented at the Biomed 2008. The papers cover almost every aspect of Biomedical Engineering, from artificial intelligence to biomechanics, from medical informatics to tissue engineering. They also come from almost all parts of the globe, from America to Europe, from the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific. This set of papers presents to you the current research work being carried out in various disciplines of Biomedical En- neering, including new and innovative researches in emerging areas. As the organizers of Biomed 2008, we are very proud to be able to come-up with this publication. We owe the success to many individuals who worked very hard to achieve this: members of the Technical Committee, the Editors, and the Inter- tional Advisory Committee. We would like to take this opportunity to record our thanks and appreciation to each and every one of them. We are pretty sure that you will find many of the papers illuminating and useful for your own research and study. We hope that you will enjoy yourselves going through them as much as we had enjoyed compiling them into the proceedings. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman Chairperson, Organising Committee, Biomed 2008

This first of two volumes on EMG (Electromyography) covers a wide range of subjects, from Principles and Methods, Signal Processing, Diagnostics, Evoked Potentials, to EMG in combination with other technologies and New Frontiers in Research and Technology. The authors vary in their approach to their subjects, from reviews of the field, to experimental studies with exciting new findings. The authors review the literature related to the use of surface electromyography (SEMG) parameters for measuring muscle function and fatigue to the limitations of different analysis and processing techniques. The final section on new frontiers in research and technology describes new applications where electromyography is employed as a means for humans to control electromechanical systems, water surface electromyography, scanning electromyography, EMG measures in orthodontic appliances, and in the ophthalmological field. These original approaches to the use of EMG measurement provide a bridge to the second volume on clinical applications of EMG.

Implantable sensing, whether used for transient or long-term monitoring of in vivo physiological, bio-electrical, bio-chemical and metabolic changes, is a rapidly advancing field of research and development. Underpinned by increasingly small, smart and energy efficient designs, they become an integral part of surgical prostheses or implants for both acute and chronic conditions, supporting optimised, context aware sensing, feedback, or stimulation with due consideration of system level impact. From sensor design, fabrication, on-node processing with application specific integrated circuits, to power optimisation, wireless data paths and security, this book provides a detailed explanation of both the theories and practical considerations of developing novel implantable sensors. Other topics covered by the book include sensor embodiment and flexible electronics, implantable optical sensors and power harvesting. Implantable Sensors and Systems – from Theory to Practice is an important reference for those working in the field of medical devices. The structure of the book is carefully prepared so that it can also be used as an introductory reference for those about to enter into this exciting research and developing field.
