This book covers water waves, surf zone hydrodynamics, tides in oceans and estuaries, storm surges, estuarine mixing, basic sediment transport, coastal morphodynamics and coastal groundwater dynamics. It is an introductory treatment, suitable for a first course in coastal and estuarine processes for earth scientists or engineers. Yet, there are substantial amounts of new material that are included, such as the explicit, analytical treatment of transient, forced long waves. Inclusion of this material will in turn strongly enhance the introductory treatment of tsunami, storm surges and surf beat. The treatment of sine wave theory emphasizes expressions which are explicit in the water depth h (using koh instead of kh) so that they can easily be differentiated or integrated with respect to h. This is a major pedagogical advantage because of the enhanced transparency. The treatment of turbulent mixing includes finite mixing length effects which provide an explanation for differential diffusion of different sediment sizes in suspension. The effects of acceleration skewness and boundary layer streaming are also included in the basic sediment transport models. The inclusion of beach groundwater dynamics — including the mechanisms by which waves as well as tides drive groundwater motion — provides a link between the previously unconnected fields of coastal hydraulics and regional groundwater modeling.Serving as a good reference book, it is fully indexed and comprehensively cross referenced. Abundant references to more detailed texts are also provided.

Process-based morphodynamic modelling is one of the relatively new tools at the disposal of coastal scientists, engineers and managers. On paper, it offers the possibility to analyse morphological processes and to investigate the effects of various measures one might consider to alleviate some problems. For these to be applied in practice, a model should be relatively straightforward to set up. It should be accurate enough to represent the details of interest, it should run long enough and robustly to see the real effects happen, and the physical processes represented in such a way that the sediment generally goes in the right direction at the right rate. Next, practitioners must be able to judge if the patterns and outcomes of the model are realistic and finally, translate these colour pictures and vector plots to integrated parameters that are relevant to the client or end user. In a nutshell, this book provides an in-depth review of ways to model coastal processes, including many hands-on exercises.

Large amounts of pollutants and natural disasters have been released into coastal and marine waters, wreaking havoc on the ecosystem and ecology. Pollution and habitat loss caused by humans have had and continue to have a significant impact on worldwide coastal and estuarine ecosystems. More than 80% of all marine pollution originates on land, with the majority of it coming from industrial, agricultural, and urban sources. Coastal and marine pollution is caused by human activities such as offshore oil and gas extraction and maritime oil transportation. Many of the world's estuaries and coastal zones are experiencing eutrophication, hypoxia, and other negative consequences as a result of anthropogenic activities. As a result, it's vital to avoid and regulate coastal and marine pollution, as well as build improved monitoring protocols and systems to aid in the understanding of spatial and temporal changes in coastal water quality. Recent technological advancements in coastal and marine seawater quality monitoring, such as real-time data collecting via data buoys, large-scale remote sensing intervention, automated data collection, and so on, are critical for comprehending real-time data and its influence on the environment.

World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM) brings researchers, policy makers and practitioners from around the world in the same platform to discuss various challenging issues of disaster risk management, enhance understanding of risks and advance actions for reducing risks and building resilience to disasters. The fifth WCDM deliberates on three critical issues that pose the most serious challenges as well as hold the best possible promise of building resilience to disasters. These are Technology, Finance, and Capacity. WCDM has emerged as the largest global conference on disaster management outside the UN system. The fifth WCDM was attended by more than 2500 scientists, professionals, policy makers, practitioners all around the world despite the prevalence of pandemic.

This book includes new results of theoretical and experimental studies of various scales of the processes occurring on the earth including the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. Intensive development of research in these areas is due to several factors: 1) the widespread introduction of computer technology, allowing the calculation of complex phenomena; 2) the invention and improvement of a new generation of geophysical instruments such as remote observation systems based on ships, aircraft, and satellites, providing a large amount of data to objectively reflect a broad picture of the processes; and 3) the development of measurement techniques, creating opportunities for controllable and reproducible laboratory data acquisition for generation of new ideas and concepts. Their recent developments have facilitated our research and understanding of these academic fields. The book enriches the understanding of the geophysical processes taking place in various environments (lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere), including the anthropogenic one, and it further contributes to their development. This book is a valuable resource for specialists working in the oil, gas, and engineering industry to improve their understandings of the field.

River Flow 2024 features keynote lectures and contributed papers presented at the 12th International Conference on Fluvial Hydraulics, held from September 2nd to 6th, 2024, in Liverpool. River Flow 2024 provides an overview of the latest experimental, theoretical, and computational findings on fundamental river flow and transport processes, river morphology, and morphodynamics. It also addresses the impacts of hydraulic structures on flow regimes, river morphology, and ecology; sustainable river engineering practices, including stream restoration and re-naturalization; and the effects of climate change, including extreme flood events. Additionally, the conference covers topics such as sediment, pollutant, and microplastic dynamics in rivers; fluid mechanics, numerical modelling, and two-phase flow; monitoring techniques and artificial intelligence; and natural flood management, vegetation, wood, and river restoration. River Flow 2024 aims to present ongoing and the state-of-the-art in river research and engineering, targeting academics and practitioners in hydraulics, hydrology, and environmental engineering. Organized under the auspices of the Committee on Fluvial Hydraulics of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), the River Flow conference series has gained international recognition as one of the most reputable events in the fluvial hydraulics community, attracting a large and loyal audience of river researchers and engineers. Thanks to the Stephen E. Coleman Award for the best research paper from a young academic and for its mission focused towards promoting knowledge transfer and idea exchange, it has also become a point of reference for the early career researcher and younger academics, with the master classes at the centre of it. The 12th edition also featured the “Networking and Mentoring Event: Embracing Gender Equity and Diversity” to enable all the member of the community to maximise their opportunity withing the sector.
