The turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) is an irregular boundary between turbulent and irrotational flow, which widely exists in various flow types, such as turbulent boundary layer, combustion flame front, turbulent patches in atmosphere and ocean, pollutant dispersion, etc. Due to its importance in affecting the intermittent characteristic and the mixing and entertainment process of turbulent flows, TNTI has become one of the most active branches of turbulent research in the past decades. Nevertheless, the scientific community still faces various challenges that hinder an ultimate characterization and modelling of TNTI. The unresolved problems, to name a few, spread from the lack of a well-accepted definition of TNTI to the intriguing origin of its fractal multi-scale nature. The dynamics of TNTI, which is the key for the mechanism of the exchange of mass, momentum and energy between turbulence and irrotational outflows, also deserves an interpretation from the perspective ofturbulent structures. This book presents the proceedings of the "IUTAM Symposium on turbulent/non-turbulent interface in turbulent shear flow' will be held in 2024, Oct. This book will collect the up-to-date works from active researchers worldwide to anchor the state-of-art knowledge of TNTI and to envision the future direction of this field. This plenary paper and the accompanying presentation have highlighted field problems involving fluid-structure interaction over a wide span of Navy operations. Considering the vast size and versatility of the Navy's inventory, the cases presented represent examples of a much larger problem. But even this limited set provides sufficient evidence that fluid-structure interaction does hinder the Navy's ability to accomplish its missions. This survey has also established that there are no accurate and generally applicable design tools for addressing these problems. In the majority of cases the state-of-practice is to either make ad-hoc adjustments and estimates based on historical evidence, or conduct expensive focused tests directed at each specific problem and/or candidate solution. Unfortunately, these approaches do not provide insight into the fundamental problem, and neither can be considered reliable regarding their likelihood of success. So the opportunities for applying computational fluid-structure interaction modeling to Navy problems appear limitless. Scenarios range from the "simple" resonant strumming of underwater and in-air cables, to the "self-contained" flow field and vibration of aircraft/ordnance bodies at various Mach numbers, to violent underwater transient detonations and local hull structural collapse. Generally applicable and computationally tractable design-oriented models for these phenomena are of course still far in the future. But the Navy has taken the first steps in that direction by sponsoring specialized numerical models, validation experiments tailored for specific applications, and conferences such as this one.

Elementary vortices – those tubular swirling vortical structures with concentrated vorticity commonly observed in various kinds of turbulent flows – play key roles in turbulence dynamics (e.g. enhancement of mixing, diffusion and resistance) and characterize turbulence statistics (e.g. intermittency). The dynamics of transitional and turbulent flows is often dominated by organized structures with a life-time much longer than a characteristic time scale of the surrounding small-scale turbulence. Organized structures may appear as secondary flows as a result of an instability but they persist in turbulent flows. They manifest themselves as eddies or localized vortices and play an important role in e.g. mixing and transport processes. Al though the existence of organized structures has been revealed by many experiments and by numerical simulations they are somewhat elusive, as there is no consensus on how to define them and technically how to detect them. In recent years several identification tools for analysing complex flows have been developed. These tools include various versions of the Proper Orthog onal Decomposition (POD) technique, wavelet transforms, pattern recogni tion, etc. At the same time, improvements in experimental techniques have made available data that further necessitate efficient detection methods. A prominent example is the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique from which complex spatio-temporal flow data can be obtained. An interesting feature of some of the identification techniques is that they form the basis for reduced models by which dynamical processes can be studied in details. From studies of dissipative dynamical systems it has been revealed that, in phase space, transitional and turbulent flows can be identified by their low-dimensional behaviour. Thus, employing data from experiments or nu merical simulations to form modes residing on finite-dimensional attractors may dramatically reduce computing costs.

The text of the Persian poet Rum ̄ ̄ ?, written some eight centuries ago, and reproduced at the beginning of this book is still relevant to many of our pursuits of knowledge, not least of turbulence. The text illustrates the inability people have in seeing the whole thing, the ‘big picture’. Everybody looks into the problem from his/her vi- point, and that leads to disagreement and controversy. If we could see the whole thing, our understanding would become complete and there would be no cont- versy. The turbulent motion of the atmosphere and oceans, at the heart of the observed general circulation, is undoubtedly very complex and dif?cult to understand in its entirety. Even ‘bare’ turbulence, without rotation and strati?cation whose effects are paramount in the atmosphere and oceans, still poses great fundamental ch- lenges for understanding after a century of research. Rotating strati?ed turbulence is a relatively new research topic. It is also far richer, exhibiting a host of distinct wave types interacting in a complicated and often subtle way with long-lived - herent structures such as jets or currents and vortices. All of this is tied together by basic ?uid-dynamical nonlinearity, and this gives rise to a multitude of phen- ena: spontaneous wave emission, wave-induced transport, both direct and inverse energy scale cascades, lateral and vertical anisotropy, fronts and transport barriers, anomalous transport in coherent vortices, and a very wide range of dynamical and thermodynamical instabilities.

In 1976 a similar titled IUTAM Symposium (Structure of Turbulence and Drag Reduction) was held in Washington . However, the progress made during the last thirteen years as weil as the much promising current research desired a second one this year. In Washington drag reduction by additives and by direct manipulation of the walls (compliant walls and heated surfaces) were discussed. In the meantime it became evident that drag reduction also occurs when turbulence is influenced by geometrical means, e.g. by influencing the pressure distribution by the shape of the body (airfoils) or by the introduction of streamwise perturbances on a body (riblets). In the recent years turbulence research has seen increasing attention being focused on the investigation of coherent structures, mainly in Newtonian fluids. We all know that these structures are a significant feature of turbulent flows, playing an important role in the energy balance in such flows. However their place in turbulence theories as weil as the factors influencing their development are still poorly understood. Consequently, the investigation of phenomena in which the properties of coherent structures are alte red provides a promising means of improving our understanding of turbulent flows in general.
