Swarm Planning written by Rob Roggema and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-11 with Science categories.
This book shows that the problem of climate adaptation, which is described in social planning terms as ‘wicked,’ is at odds with the contemporary practice of spatial planning. The author proposes a new adjusted framework which is more adaptable to unpredictable, wicked, dynamic and non-linear processes. The inspiration for this new method is the behaviour of swarms: bees, ants, birds and fish are capable of self-organization, which enables the system to become less vulnerable to sudden environmental changes. The framework proposed in Swarm Planning consists of these four elements: Two levels of complexity, the first being the whole system and the second its individual components. Each of these has different attributes for adapting to change. Five layers, consisting of networks, focal points, unplanned space, natural resources and emerging occupation patterns. Each layer has its own spatial dynamic, and each is connected to a spatial scale. Non-linear processes, which emerge in different parts of the framework and include emerging patterns, connectedness and tipping points among others. Two planning processes; the first, ‘from small to large’ works upward from the slowest changing elements to more rapidly-changing ones. The second, ‘on the list of partners’ addresses each layer from networks through emerging occupation patterns. Swarm Planning applies this framework to a series of pilot studies, and appraises its performance using criteria for an adaptive landscape. The results show that the use of the Swarm Planning Framework reduces the vulnerability of landscapes as well as the impact of climate hazards and disasters, improves response to unexpected hazards and contains adaptation strategies. “This book is a must for planners in government and the private sector as it outlines the concept, strategies and techniques for swarm planning. It is also an important guide for policymakers looking to engage communities in a dialogue about the adaptation planning process.” Professor John Martin, La Trobe University “The ultimate value of the book lies in encouraging the planning community to consider options that go far beyond those offered by business-as-usual planning methodologies developed for a set of operating conditions that are fast becoming obsolete. As such it makes an important and much needed contribution to the field.” Assistant Professor Dr. Chrisna du Plessis, University of Pretoria

Due to the lack of success in climate change mitigation efforts, the importance of adaptation is becoming more and more apparent and is now one of the main imperatives of international research and action. However, research on adaptation is mostly not directly applicable to adaptation policy or practice, leaving a gap between scientific results and practical advice for decision makers and planners. This book seeks to address this problem and bridge the gap and should provide readers with practical and applicable information on climate change adaptation. Following an introduction, the book is organised into four main sections, each reflecting an essential component in the adaptation process. Climate change adaptation is an emerging subject area and has gained increased political and academic attention within the last decade. Whereas most books in the field focus on adaptation in developing countries, this volume provides an examination of predominantly European policy and offers inter-disciplinary insight into cutting edge knowledge and lessons learnt in a relatively new field of implementation.

With the growing advances in technology and transformation to digital services, the world is becoming more connected and more complex. Huge heterogeneous data are generated at rapid speed from various types of sensors. Augmented with artificial intelligence and machine learning and internet of things, latent relations, and new insights can be captured helping in optimizing plans and resource utilization, improving infrastructure, and enhancing quality of services. A “spatial data management system” is a way to take care of data that has something to do with space. This could include data such as maps, satellite images, and GPS data. A temporal data management system is a system designed to manage data that has a temporal component. This could include data such as weather data, financial data, and social media data. Some advanced techniques used in spatial and temporal data management systems include geospatial indexing for efficient querying and retrieval of location-based data, time-series analysis for understanding and predicting temporal patterns in datasets like weather or financial trends, machine learning algorithms for uncovering hidden patterns and correlations in large and complex datasets, and integration with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for real-time data collection and analysis. These techniques, augmented with artificial intelligence, enable the extraction of latent relations and insights, thereby optimizing plans, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of services. This book provides essential technical knowledge, best practices, and case studies on the state-of-the-art techniques of artificial intelligence and machine learning for spatiotemporal data analysis and modeling. The book is composed of several chapters written by experts in their fields and focusing on several applications including recommendation systems, big data analytics, supply chains and e-commerce, energy consumption and demand forecasting, and traffic and environmental monitoring. It can be used as academic reference at graduate level or by professionals in science and engineering related fields such as data science and engineering, big data analytics and mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning, cloud computing, and internet of things.

Policy And Strategic Behaviour In Water Resource Management written by Ariel Dinar and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-16 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Water resource management throughout the world is a very complicated issue, involving various aspects and dimensions and a well-coordinated set of policies. A well-designed water policy is a multi-faceted concerted intervention, which could be specific to just one set of political and physical socio-economic conditions. A framework to analyse the interaction between policy design and implementation can assist in improving both of these in various physical, economic and political situations. This book focuses on the interaction between policy making and strategic behaviour of policy makers, water users and other stakeholders, and how policy analysis and other analytical tools from the field of game theory and negotiation can improve policy design. The book presents analysis by high-level policy makers and policy analysts from various countries, to share experience regarding specific policy issues that are relevant to almost any country in the world, but may have been addressed differently in each country.

This edited volume explores the circumstances under which vulnerable communities can better adapt to climate and environmental change, and focuses in particular on the centrality of migration as a resilience and adaptation strategy for communities at risk. The book features important case studies where migration is being used as a risk management strategy in the Pacific, Sub-Sahara Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Its comparative analysis reveals common patterns in enhancing local resilience through migration across diverse regional, socio-economic, cultural, and political contexts. This book is a contribution to the global discussion about the future of migration policy, especially as climate and environmental change is expected to grow as one of the most pressing challenges of our time.
