For many years Esko Ukkonen has played a major role in the advancement of computer science in Finland. He was the key person in the development of the school of algorithmic research and has contributed considerably to post-graduate education in his country. Esko Ukkonen has over the years worked within many areas of computer science, including numerical methods, complexity theory, theoretical aspects of compiler construction, and logic programming. However, the main focus of his research has been on algorithms and their applications. This Festschrift volume, published to honor Esko Ukkonen on his 60th birthday, includes 18 refereed contributions by his former PhD students and colleagues, with whom he has cooperated closely during the course of his career. The Festschrift was presented to Esko during a festive symposium organized at the University of Helsinki to celebrate his birthday. The essays primarily present research on computational pattern matching and string algorithms, two areas that have benefited significantly from the work of Esko Ukonen.

High-throughput sequencing and functional genomics technologies have given us a draft human genome sequence and have enabled large-scale genotyping and gene expression profiling of human populations. Databases containing large number of sequences, polymorphisms, and gene expression profiles of normal and diseased tissues in different clinical states are rapidly being generated for human and model organisms. Bioinformatics is thus rapidly growing in importance in the annotation of genomic sequences, in the understanding of the interplay between genes and proteins, in the analysis the genetic variability of species, etc. The 3rd APBC brings together researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners for interaction and exchange of knowledge and ideas. The proceedings contains the latest results that address conceptual and practical issues of bioinformatics.Papers presented at APBC'05 and included in this proceedings volume span the following: Novel Applications in Bioinformatics, Computational Analysis of Biological Data, Data Mining & Statistical Modeling of Biological Data, Modeling and Simulation of Biological Processes, Visualization of Biological Processes and Data, Management, Migration, and Integration of Biological Databases, Access, Indexing, and Search in Biological Databases.

This book offers an in-depth overview of polyhedral methods and efficient algorithms in combinatorial optimization. These methods form a broad, coherent and powerful kernel in combinatorial optimization, with strong links to discrete mathematics, mathematical programming and computer science. In eight parts, various areas are treated, each starting with an elementary introduction to the area, with short, elegant proofs of the principal results, and each evolving to the more advanced methods and results, with full proofs of some of the deepest theorems in the area. Over 4000 references to further research are given, and historical surveys on the basic subjects are presented.

This is a book about computation, something which is ubiquitous in the modern world. More precisely, it examines computability theory and computational complexity theory. Computability theory is the part of mathematics and computer science which seeks to clarify what we mean by computation or algorithm. When is there a computational solution possible to some question? How can we show that none is possible? How computationally hard is the question we are concerned with? Arguably, this area lead to the development of digital computers. (Computational) complexity theory is an intellectual heir of computability theory. Complexity theory is concerned with understanding what resources are needed for computation, where typically we would measure the resources in terms of time and space. Can we perform some task in a feasible number of steps? Can we perform some algorithm with only a limited memory? Does randomness help? Are there standard approaches to overcoming computational difficulty?

Network Security Empowered By Artificial Intelligence written by Yingying Chen and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-25 with Computers categories.

This book introduces cutting-edge methods on security in spectrum management, mobile networks and next-generation wireless networks in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This book includes four parts: (a) Architecture Innovations and Security in 5G Networks, (b) Security in Artificial Intelligence-enabled Intrusion Detection Systems. (c) Attack and Defense in Artificial Intelligence-enabled Wireless Systems, (d) Security in Network-enabled Applications. The first part discusses the architectural innovations and security challenges of 5G networks, highlighting novel network structures and strategies to counter vulnerabilities. The second part provides a comprehensive analysis of intrusion detection systems and the pivotal role of AI and machine learning in defense and vulnerability assessment. The third part focuses on wireless systems, where deep learning is explored to enhance wireless communication security. The final part broadens the scope, examining the applications of these emerging technologies in network-enabled fields. The advancement of AI/ML has led to new opportunities for efficient tactical communication and network systems, but also new vulnerabilities. Along this direction, innovative AI-driven solutions, such as game-theoretic frameworks and zero-trust architectures are developed to strengthen defenses against sophisticated cyber threats. Adversarial training methods are adopted to augment this security further. Simultaneously, deep learning techniques are emerging as effective tools for securing wireless communications and improving intrusion detection systems. Additionally, distributed machine learning, exemplified by federated learning, is revolutionizing security model training. Moreover, the integration of AI into network security, especially in cyber-physical systems, demands careful consideration to ensure it aligns with the dynamics of these systems. This book is valuable for academics, researchers, and students in AI/ML, network security, and related fields. It serves as a resource for those in computer networks, AI, ML, and data science, and can be used as a reference or secondary textbook.

Input Output In Parallel And Distributed Computer Systems written by Ravi Jain and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Computers categories.

Input/Output in Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems has attracted increasing attention over the last few years, as it has become apparent that input/output performance, rather than CPU performance, may be the key limiting factor in the performance of future systems. This I/O bottleneck is caused by the increasing speed mismatch between processing units and storage devices, the use of multiple processors operating simultaneously in parallel and distributed systems, and by the increasing I/O demands of new classes of applications, like multimedia. It is also important to note that, to varying degrees, the I/O bottleneck exists at multiple levels of the memory hierarchy. All indications are that the I/O bottleneck will be with us for some time to come, and is likely to increase in importance. Input/Output in Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems is based on papers presented at the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops held in conjunction with the International Parallel Processing Symposium. This book is divided into three parts. Part I, the Introduction, contains four invited chapters which provide a tutorial survey of I/O issues in parallel and distributed systems. The chapters in Parts II and III contain selected research papers from the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops; many of these papers have been substantially revised and updated for inclusion in this volume. Part II collects the papers from both years which deal with various aspects of system software, and Part III addresses architectural issues. Input/Output in Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems is suitable as a secondary text for graduate level courses in computer architecture, software engineering, and multimedia systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

The first problem is concerned with a complex technical system: a special carousel based high-speed storage system - Rotastore. It is shown that this logistic problem leads to an NP-hard Batch Presorting Pr- lem (BPSP) which is not easy to solve optimally in offline situations. We consider a polynomial case and develope an exact algorithm for offline situations. Competitive analysis showed that the proposed online - gorithm is 312-competitive. Online algorithms with lookahead improve the online solutions in particular cases. If the capacity constraint on additional storage is neglected the problem has a totally unimodular polyhedron.
