This report provides the latest updates on hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in Europe and Central Asia, including the cost and affordability of healthy diets. It also explores the central theme of water security, highlighting its critical connections to agriculture, food security and nutrition. While the region has made progress in reducing hunger and food insecurity (SDG Target 2.1), challenges remain in eliminating all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2). Food insecurity and malnutrition persist in some countries, influenced by income levels, socioeconomic factors and climate risks. In 2023, global undernourishment remained at 9.1 percent, whereas the region has stayed below 2.5 percent since 2005, except in Central Asia (3 percent in 2023 and marginally higher in 2022). Food insecurity affected 11.5 percent of the population in 2023, well below the global average (28.9 percent). Many countries have reduced child stunting, wasting and low birthweight, but childhood overweight, anaemia in women aged 15–49, and adult obesity remain concerns. In 2022, 64.3 million people in the region couldn’t afford a healthy diet, though numbers have declined after the pandemic. At 16.3 percent, Central Asia had the highest unaffordability rate.Water security challenges – including scarcity, ageing infrastructure, pollution and weak governance – affect Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Western Balkans. Poor water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure in some areas impacts nutrition and health. The report recommends improving water conservation and recycling and exploring the use of alternative sources such as desalination and groundwater. Strengthening transboundary cooperation and promoting sustainable water management are crucial. Reducing agriculture’s water footprint through efficient crop choices can enhance climate resilience and long-term water sustainability.

In recent years, the Nexus concept has become widely used in the international development community, not least since the Bonn 2011 Nexus Conference. While the Millennium Development Goals did not include a goal on energy and had no focus on the WEFE Nexus, the global development policy context was significantly changed with the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, 2015), the Paris Agreement on Climate Change (2015), the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development (2015), the New Urban Agenda (2016), the New European Consensus on Development - "Our world, our dignity, our future" (2017) that underline the importance of policy coherence and integrated approaches across traditional development sectors. Current EU development policy provides a general frame and background that justifies a Nexus approach and methodology. Thus, the new European Consensus on Development: "Our World, our Dignity, our Future" (June 2017) emphasises an integrated approach to development and strongly supports the 2030 Agenda with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted in September 2015 as a global framework for sustainable development action. The 2030 Agenda itself emphasises an integrated approach that can facilitate a Nexus methodology. As stated by the DEVCO Director General Stefano Manservisi in an interview on 14 June 2018 with DEVEX: "The SDGs are obliging us to work in an integrated way and not in silos". DG DEVCO and JRC have been supporting works on the Nexus and originally addressed the water-energy-food security (WEF) Nexus, but it soon became clear that ecosystems represent essential conditions for ensuring the sustainability of the development solutions. Thus, Water, Energy, Food security rely on resources and services provided by healthy ecosystems, and, consequently, these should therefore be integrated into the NEXUS approach. In the following sections, the terms "WEFE Nexus" or "Nexus" in short refers to this concept unless otherwise stated. DG DEVCO and JRC jointly organised a consultation of international experts on the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus ("WEFE Nexus") that was held in Brussels on 25-26 January 2018. This NEXUS experts' consultation was oriented towards moving forward on the implementation and operationalisation of the Nexus approach with the objective of improving the sustainability of intervention projects and programmes involving water-energy-food security, and therefore, to contribute to simultaneous achievement of related SDGs. The work presented here outlined the importance and benefits of the WEFE Nexus as an approach and methodology for the implementation of the EU development policies and cooperation. It aimed at integrating governance and management across water, energy and food security areas while attempting to balance different uses of ecosystem resources and services.

Increasing the efficiency of water use and enhancing agricultural water productivity at all levels of the production chains are becoming priorities in a growing number of countries. In particular, shifting to modern on-farm irrigation practices can contribute to a substantial increase in both water use efficiency and water productivity. The objective of this handbook is to provide a practical guide on the use of pressurised irrigation techniques to farmers, irrigation technicians, and extension workers in the field. In this second edition, the handbook has been considerably revises, including new chapters on low-cost drip irrigation and pipe distribution systems for smallholders. (Also available in French)

Telecoupling written by Cecilie Friis and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-21 with Science categories.

This book presents a comprehensive exploration of the emerging concept and framework of telecoupling and how it can help create a better understanding of land-use change in a globalised world. Land-use change is increasingly characterised by a spatial disconnect between its main environmental, socioeconomic and political drivers and the main impacts and outcomes of those changes. The authors examine how this separation of the production and consumption of land-based resources is driven by population growth, urbanisation, climate change, and biodiversity and carbon conservation efforts. Identifying and fostering more sustainable, just and equitable modes of land use and intervening in unsustainable ones thus constitute substantial, almost overwhelming challenges for science and policy. This book brings together leading scholars on land-use change and sustainability to systematically discuss the relevance of telecoupling research in addressing these challenges. The book presents an overview of the telecoupling approach, reflects on a number of the most pressing issues surrounding land-use change today and discusses the agenda for advancing understanding on sustainable land-use change through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.
