Dans le livre de l'Exode (Ex 3,15), après avoir révélé à Moïse son Nom - YHWH -, Dieu déclare solennellement : " c'est ainsi (sous mon Nom YHWH) que l'on fera mémoire de moi d'âge en âge ; comprenons : c'est ainsi qu'on m'invoquera d'âge en âge. La Révélation du Nom a donc pour finalité son invocation. Dans la Bible, cette dernière formule englobe toutes les formes de prière, en particulier les deux fondamentales : la louange et la supplication. Sur quoi se fonde cette articulation ? Telle est la question à laquelle cet ouvrage voudrait répondre en analysant la portée du Nom dans le langage sémitique, plus spécifiquement biblique. Cette étude de l'enracinement de la prière dans l'expérience religieuse de l'Ancien Testament débouche tout naturellement sur le Nouveau Testament et l'auteur montre à partir de quelques exemples comment son analyse permet d'éclairer l'invocation du nom de Jésus.
