Anche grazie al suo saggio, nei pochissimi anni trascorsi dalla prima edizione si sono smosse le acque in un ambito che coinvolge interessi colossali, e hanno preso consistenza iniziative a diversi livelli: rapporti conoscitivi, commissioni comunitarie, progetti di legge europei per proibire o scoraggiare la commercializzazione di prodotti tecnologici a scadenza occulta, e insieme azioni dal basso, siti dedicati e forme di resistenza conviviale per imparare a riparare ciò che altrimenti finirebbe nelle discariche. Latouche ce ne informa ampiamente in questa nuova edizione, senza appiattirsi sulla logica del complotto e del sabotaggio industriali, ma senza cadere neppure nel tranello delle pseudosoluzioni di ecoefficienza, che riversano sul mercato apparecchi meno energivori il cui risparmio tuttavia non compenserà mai i costi ambientali della rottamazione del vecchio. Simbolica, ossia effetto del declassamento indotto dalle mode, pianificata, diretta o indiretta, come nel caso dei software ormai incompatibili con i nuovi sistemi operativi, l'obsolescenza ha molti aspetti e una sola finalità: perpetuare l'economia di iperconsumo e spreco. Una sciagurata follia, per Latouche, che le contrappone la via virtuosa della decrescita, dove agli oggetti, e a noi tutti, sia data ancora una possibilità.
