Design Engineering Manual offers a practical guide to the key principles of design engineering. It features a compilation of extracts from several books within the range of Design Engineering books in the Elsevier collection. The book is organized into 11 sections. Beginning with a review of the processes of product development and design, the book goes on to describe systematic ways of choosing materials and processes. It details the properties of modern metallic alloys including commercial steels, cast irons, superalloys, titanium alloys, structural intermetallic compounds, and aluminum alloys. The book explains the human/system interface; procedures to assess the risks associated with job and task characteristics; and environmental factors that may be encountered at work and affect behavior. Product liability and safety rules are discussed. The final section on design techniques introduces the design process from an inventors perspective to a more formal model called total design. It also deals with the behavior of plastics that influence the application of practical and complex engineering equations and analysis in the design of products. Provides a single-source of critical information to the design engineer, saving time and therefore money on a particular design project Presents both the fundamentals and advanced topics and also the latest information in key aspects of the design process Examines all aspects of the design process in one concise and accessible volume

The Design For Everything Manual written by Henry W. Stoll and has been published by Createspace Independent Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This concise and readable manual is a useful resource for anyone interested in the design of engineered products and equipment. The Design for Everything Manual integrates a wide range of "design for X" topics such as user-centered design, efficient design, design for manufacture, and coordinated product and process design into a unified "Design for Everything" approach that is easily understood and used regardless of technical background or training. Over the years, a wealth of practical design knowledge has been learned about how to achieve good design. This knowledge is captured by four fundamental rules of good design: the rule of needs, the rule of clarity, the rule of simplicity, and the rule of safety. Good design is achieved by applying these rules in a systematic and disciplined manner to the critical choices that define the design. The manual is derived from notes that the author developed over many years of teaching a course on "Design for X" in the Master of Product Design and Development Program at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. "Design for X" (DFX for short) is a label applied to a large collection of design methods (e.g., Design for Assembly, Lean Design) and design guidelines that address particular design issues. The Design for Everything Manual focuses on the principles and practices that underlie the DFX methods rather than on the methods themselves. It covers the same material and addresses the same spectrum of concerns, but in a simpler and more integrated fashion. Design for Everything is a strategic design approach that is of value to those studying, teaching, and practicing design across a wide range of disciplines. Design and manufacturing executives, product managers and project managers, and other high-level decision makers can use the manual to quickly learn how to achieve good design. Experienced design engineers and industrial designers can use it as a handy reference. Business students and engineering students can use it as a practical guide for new product development courses and senior design projects. Manufacturing companies can use it to develop a "common language" and "shared vision" for good design. Ultimately, all designers can use it as a guiding light for achieving the elusive goal of "doing it right the first time."

Most books on standardization describe the impact of ISO and related organizations on many industries. While this is great for managing an organization, it leaves engineers asking questions such aswhat are the effects of standards on my designs? andhow can I use standardization to benefit my work? The Manual of Engineering Drawing has long been the recognised as a guide for practicing and student engineers to producing engineering drawings and annotated 3D models that comply with the latest British and ISO Standards of Technical Product Specifications and Documentation. This new edition has been updated to include the requirements of BS8888 2008 and the relevant ISO Standards, and is ideal for International readership; it includes a guide to the fundamental differences between the ISO and ASME Standards relating to Technical Product Specification and Documentation. Equally applicable to CAD and manual drawing it includes the latest development in 3D annotation and the specification of surface texture. The Duality Principle is introduced as this important concept is still very relevant in the new world of 3D Technical Product Specification. Written by members of BSI and ISO committees and a former college lecturer, the Manual of Engineering Drawing combines up to the minute technical information with clear, readable explanations and numerous diagrams and traditional geometrical construction techniques rarely taught in schools and colleges. This approach makes this manual an ideal companion for students studying vocational courses in Technical Product Specification, undergraduates studying engineering or product design and any budding engineer beginning a career in design. The comprehensive scope of this new edition encompasses topics such as orthographic and pictorial projections, dimensional, geometrical and surface tolerancing, 3D annotation and the duality principle, along with numerous examples of electrical and hydraulic diagrams with symbols and applications of cams, bearings, welding and adhesives. The definitive guide to draughting to the latest ISO and ASME standards An essential reference for engineers, and students, involved in design engineering and product design Written by two ISO committee members and practising engineers

Good design is the key to the manufacture of successful commercial products. It encompasses creativity, technical ability, communication at all levels, good management and the abiltity to mould these attributes together. There are no single answers to producing a well designed product. There are however tried and tested principles which, if followed, increase the likely success of any final product. Engineering Design Principles introduces these principles to engineering students and professional engineers. Drawing on historical and familiar examples from the present, the book provides a stimulating guide to the principles of good engineering design. The comprehensive coverage of this text makes it invaluable to all undergraduates requiring a firm foundation in the subject. Introduction to principles of good engineering design like: problem identification, creativity, concept selection, modelling, design management and information gathering Rich selection of historical and familiar present examples

Plastics have become increasingly important in the products used in our society, ranging from housing to packaging, transportation, business machines and especially in medicine and health products. Designing plastic parts for this wide range of uses has become a major activity for designers, architects, engineers, and others who are concerned with product development. Because plastics are unique materials with a broad range of proper ties they are adaptable to a variety of uses. The uniqueness of plastics stems from their physical characteristics which are as different from metals, glasses, and ceramics as these materials are different from each other. One major concern is the design of structures to take loads. Metals as well as the other materials are assumed to respond elastically and to recover completely their original shape after the load is removed. Based on this simple fact, extensive litera ture on applied mechanics of materials has been developed to enable designers to predict accurately the performance of structures under load. Many engineers depend on such texts as Timoshenko's Strength of Materials as a guide to the performance of structures. Using this as a guide, generations of engineers have designed economical and safe structural parts. Unfortunately, these design principles must be modified when designing with plastics since they do not respond elastically to stress and undergo permanent deformation with sus tained loading.
