Given medical advances and greater understanding of healthful living habits, people are living longer lives. Proportionally speaking, a greater percentage of the population is elderly. Despite medical advances, there is still no cure for dementia, and as elderly individuals succumb to Alzheimer's Disease or related dementia, more and more people are having to care their elderly parents and /or siblings. Profiles in Caregiving is practical source of information for anyone who teaches caregiving, acts as a caregiver, or studies caregiving. This book discusses recent research on stress factors associated with caregiving, and what factors impact on successful versus non-successful adaptation to the care-giving role. This is an expanding field in gerontology, and is also of interest to personality and social psychologists studying stress and interpersonal relations. Although there are many books on the cause and treatment of dementia, there has been a book that provides a research investigation into the factors associated with effective caregiving to dementia patients. Conceptualizes caregiving as a multistage career whose impact on the caregiver continues to be felt after in-home care has ceased Based upon a longitudinal survey of a demographically diverse sample of principal caregivers over a three-year period Identifies caregivers who are most at-risk for adverse adaptation to the role Describes preventative and clinical intervention strategies Identifies post-care risk and issues Identifies antecedents to successful adaptation State of the art analytic techniques Graphic presentation of empirical findings Renowned multidisciplinary research team

This third edition includes two data gathering tools, the 'Brief Daily Life Activities Pre-Guide Checklist' (Abbreviated: 'Brief DLA Pre-Guide Checklist) and the 'Daily Life Activities Guide' (Abbreviated: 'DLA Guide') designed to assist caregivers to develop a greater understanding of how the person they are caring for are able to manage their daily activities and tasks. The 'Brief Daily Life Activities Pre-Guide Checklist' determines which one of the five or a combination of two Allen's Cognitive Level forms, are to be included in the booklet - 'DLA Guide'. This booklet, once the appropriate information on one or two levels have been selected, can be given to the primary caregiver to follow-up the relevant instructions by checking (ticking) the bodily behavior the caregiver noticed. Once completed the information provides a 'snap shot' of the 'best ability to function' of the person with deficits in functional cognition. The 'Daily Life Activities Guide' is an extended version of the 'Brief Daily Life Pre-Guide Activities Checklist' and has been developed using five separate cognitive level forms based on the work of Allen and her colleagues. Further, it provides a valuable source of information for healthcare professionals and assists them with the development of care and treatment plans for the person with deficits in functional cognition. The 'Brief DLA Pre-Guide Checklist' and the 'DLA Guide' together with the 'Advanced Lifestyle Directive' will empower caregivers with a sense of self-efficacy as they are included in the information gathering process and the development of care plans. Realistically, not every person with deficits in functional cognition has a family or other informal caregivers available to provide the required information. Therefore, it is important healthcare professionals consult with care assistants who assist a person with deficits in functional cognition with their daily life activities. Observations described by many care assistants will assist in providing functional everyday information to develop a realistic care and treatment plan.

Despite the proliferation of books and articles on caregiving over the past three decades, the vast majority of research has centered on the experience of the female caregiver. This focus on women is neither unwarranted nor surprising given that women generally predominate in caregiving roles. Nonetheless, recent studies estimate that between 14 and 18 percent of men ranging in ages from nineteen to later middle age are providing care to a family member or friend with a serious illness or disability. And in men 75 or older, there are more husbands caring for wives than vice versa. Also among persons caring for AIDS sufferers in central cities, over 50 percent are men. In light of these substantial numbers, plus demographic trends that will probably increase the proportion of male caregivers in the future, it is important to study men in caregiving roles to further our understanding of this critical area of healthcare.Drs. Kramer and Thompson, both experienced researchers in the area of men as caregivers, provide an in-depth and comprehensive overview of the topic in this collection of articles from various experts.Part I provides the rationale for the volume, explores styles of caregiving, and critiques the premise that men do not do hands-on care.Part II reviews theoretical explanations of the gendered division of labor in family care and provides a critical review of methods used in studies that focus exclusively on male caregivers.Part III consists of nine chapters that both review the literature and present original research on male caregivers. Special consideration is given to gay male caregivers of partners with AIDS, men who care for a family member with dementia, fathers of adult children with mental disabilities, spousal care of women with cancer, and sons caring for parents.Part IV profiles gender-sensitive interventions, skills, supports, and services that draw upon research and clinical wisdom for working with the male caregiver. This valuable collection of current research addresses a neglected but increasingly important area of caregiving.

Family caregiving affects millions of Americans every day, in all walks of life. At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.

Chock-full of descriptive case examples, this clearly written text is a must-read for social workers, nurses, and gerontologists. By focusing on the various facets of the caregiving experience--from the caregiver's perspective to those who receive care--the authors sensitize you to the ways in which caregiving is affected by the conditions, personalities, capabilities, and wishes of both the caregivers and the care recipients. Chapters explore the range of care receivers from frail elderly to young children, and the difference in caregiving styles and options. Also addressed are issues related to resistance to care, claims of self-determination, and necessity of intervention.

The Challenges Of Mental Health Caregiving written by Ronda C. Talley and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-18 with Psychology categories.

Caring for the ill, disabled, very old, or very young requires a labor-intensive commitment that is not only essential to the well-being of individuals and to society as a whole, but also fraught with physical, financial, and psychological risks. And despite the critical nature of their job, caregivers rarely have avenues of support. The Challenges of Mental Health Caregiving addresses the complexities of the situation with uncommon depth and breadth. Suited to researchers, scientist-practitioners and clinicians, and students seeking a rounded understanding of the field, it examines how caregiving affects the lives, work, and mental health of family and professional caregivers. Chapters explore developmental, cultural, and spiritual contexts of care, addressing ongoing concerns about care in relation to larger health systems and emphasizing the need for care to be viewed as a community, rather than an individual or family experience. Further, the book's conclusion strongly advocates for more effective and efficient uses for available funds and resources while offering workable proposals for service improvements at the policy level. Key areas of coverage: The impact of caregiving on physical and mental health. Integrating mental health and primary care. The promotion of positive mental health outcomes in children and youth. Mid-life concerns and caregiver experience. Loss, grief, bereavement and the implications for mental health caregiving. Policy issues in caregiving and mental health. The Challenges of Mental Health Caregiving is a clear-sighted reference for researchers, clinicians and scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in the caregiving fields, including clinical psychology, social work, public health/medicine, geriatrics/gerontology, public policy, and educational policy.
