This study sheds light on the current state of history education in Africa and reflects on its potential to prepare this continent’s learners for the challenges of "learning to live together". Drawing on an examination of school curricula and the experiences of educational stakeholders, it identifies trends in the processes and outcomes of recent curricular revisions, and discerns key challenges relating to the teaching and learning of history across Africa. It scrutinises the place afforded to history within African education systems, and surveys related contents and pedagogies. While it identifies African history as a fundamental yet sensitive and controversial subject, it also illustrates examples of present-day curricular strategies to integrating a concern for promoting a "culture of peace".

This book examines the evolving representations of the colonial past from the mid-19th century up to decolonization in the 1960s and 70s ? the so-called era of Modern Imperialism – in post-war history textbooks from across the world. The aim of the book is to examine the evolving outlook of colonial representations in history education and the underpinning explanations for the specific outlook in different – former colonizer and colonized – countries (to be found in collective memory, popular historical culture, social representations, identity-building processes, and the state of historical knowledge within academia). The approach of the book is novel and innovative in different ways. First of all, given the complexity of the research, an original interdisciplinary approach has been implemented, which brings together historians, history educators and social psychologists to examine representations of colonialism in history education in different countries around the world while drawing on different theoretical frameworks. Secondly, given the interest in the interplay between collective memory, popular historical culture, social representations, and the state of historical knowledge within academia, a diachronic approach is implemented, examining the evolving representations of the colonial past, and connecting them to developments within society at large and academia. This will allow for a deeper understanding of the processes under examination. Thirdly, studies from various corners of the world are included in the book. More specifically, the project includes research from three categories of countries: former colonizer countries – including England, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal and Belgium –, countries having been both colonized and colonizer – Chile – and former colonized countries, including Zimbabwe, Malta and Mozambique. This selection allows pairing up the countries under review as former colonizing-colonized ones (for instance Portugal-Mozambique, United Kingdom-Malta), allowing for an in-depth comparison between the countries involved. Before reaching the research core, three introductory chapters outline three general issues. The book starts with addressing the different approaches and epistemological underpinnings history and social psychology as academic disciplines hold. In a second chapter, evolutions within international academic colonial historiography are analyzed, with a special focus on the recent development of New Imperial History. A third chapter analyses history textbooks as cultural tools and political means of transmitting historical knowledge and representations across generations. The next ten chapters form the core of the book, in which evolving representations of colonial history (from mid-19th century until decolonization in the 1960s and 1970s) are examined, explained and reflected upon, for the above mentioned countries. This is done through a history textbook analysis in a diachronic perspective. For some countries the analysis dates back to textbooks published after the Second World War; for other countries the focus will be more limited in time. The research presented is done by historians and history educators, as well as by social psychologists. In a concluding chapter, an overall overview is presented, in which similarities and differences throughout the case studies are identified, interpreted and reflected upon.

A obra, “Sociologia & Educação: Múltiplos Olhares do Ensino no Brasil e em Angola”, se insere no contexto de conhecer o que é produzido academicamente nos países. A relação Brasil e Angola é histórica, mas não se traduz na produção do conhecimento entre os países, em especial na Sociologia. O currículo brasileiro em suas disciplinas é eurocêntrico, com pouco espaço para os conteúdos que chegam dos países do Sul. Em grande medida, o saber não eurocêntrico não é reconhecido como válido. O objetivo de legitimar outros saberes. O silenciamento das inteligências nos incomoda. No primeiro capítulo, “Itinerário do Ensino de Sociologia nas instituições do ensino secundário em Angola”, Adérito Manuel discorre sobre a trajetória da Sociologia nos bancos escolares. Percebemos a dificuldade de inserção da disciplina e a importância dos aspectos políticos no cenário da educação. A discussão mostra que a Sociologia ainda não é uma área valorizada, profissionalizada, reconhecida e cientificamente consolidada. É importante buscar sociólogos comprometidos, com forte militância em defesa da Sociologia para criar ambiente institucional favorável para o desenvolvimento epistemológico. O desafio está lançado. O capítulo seguinte, de Guilherme Mateus Moma, intitulado “O impacto da Sociologia no sistema de ensino: teoria e prática” nos convidam a refletir sobre as reformas educativas em Angola. Para isso debate os currículos e discorre sobre os conteúdos a serem ministrados. O autor propõe um currículo articulado entre o universal e o tradicional, sobretudo com ênfase na realidade local. Ainda assim, Moma questiona a situação da Sociologia em Angola com enormes adversidades a serem enfrentadas. Filipe Calunga Morais em, “Para um funcionamento da sociedade sociológica angolana: rumo a promoção e desenvolvimento da ciência”, aponta o papel das associações científicas na produção do saber. Em Angola pouco se fala das associações científicas, e como o campo da Sociologia é muito recente, esse descuido prejudica a institucionalização como campo científico. Aborda-se a trajetória da Sociologia e a descontinuidade nas associações científicas criadas, bem é chamada a atenção para o esforço dos sociólogos na criação do ethos da ciência no país. O quarto capítulo, de Gildo Joaquim Salvador, “Iniciação à investigação científica no plano curricular do Ensino Secundário Geral: perspectiva sociológica do caso angolano”, nos traz uma reflexão crítica em torno da emergência da aplicação da disciplina de iniciação científica no Ensino Secundário Geral. Investiga as reformas educacionais, analisa o desenvolvimento curricular no país, critica as “escolas apressadas” que faz professores serem meros funcionários do ato pedagógico que acontece em sala. Defende a valorização da pesquisa científica entre estudantes e professores. Rodrigo de Souza Pain apresenta “´Por favor, abram o livro na página...´Obras didáticas de Sociologia e as consequências no trabalho docente”, ao trazer a trajetória da disciplina de Sociologia nos currículos no Brasil. Importante constatação é perceber a intermitência da área nos currículos ao longo do tempo. A seguir faz importantes reflexões sobre as obras didáticas. Diante das inovações tecnológicas dos avanços neste setor, os livros didáticos continuam importantes como ferramenta de apoio ao professor de Sociologia. O sexto capítulo, intitulado “Características, dinâmicas e objetivos do projeto de extensão da UERJ ‘Sociologia e Cidadania’”, do autor Walace Ferreira, nos oferece ótima oportunidade de reflexão sobre a importância dos projetos de extensão, que leva o conhecimento acadêmico para além dos muros universitários, no contexto do Ensino de Sociologia. O projeto orienta conteúdos de Sociologia, debates com universitários, promovendo importante articulação entre universidade e escolas. Joana da Costa Macedo discute “A reforma curricular nas escolas do Brasil: alguns pontos de discussão sobre o componente curricular Projeto de Vida e BNCC”, com foco sobre as reformas da educação no Brasil, e o impacto na área de Sociologia. A reforma curricular em curso se percebe neoliberalizante, desorganizada, individualista, em cenário de competição e com extrema valorização do mercado. Reflete o espectro político liberal e conservador que o país experimentou. Reflete sobre a disciplina “Projeto de Vida”, calcada na trajetória individual, de valorização da meritocracia, de modo que isola o estudante e sua trajetória dentro da escola. O oitavo capítulo, “Projetos de vida rumo à universidade: trajetórias estudantis de seis alunos cotistas do curso de direito da UERJ”, de Diego Cavalcanti de Santana reflete qual o lugar da escola nos projetos de vida dos jovens de baixa renda. Com sólida base teórica, analisa a importância do ambiente familiar como elemento pedagogicamente incitante, estimulando jovens na leitura, na escrita e no aprendizado. O autor também enfatiza a relevância do ambiente escolar (inteligência institucional) e dos docentes e do estudante institucionalmente engajado. O livro é uma obra coletiva, fruto de anos de estudo e pesquisa por parte dos autores brasileiros e angolanos. Notamos a falta de reflexões e trocas de experiências no Ensino de Sociologia, a obra tenta preencher minimamente essa lacuna. Desta maneira é um livro inédito, uma ousada iniciativa. Esta obra aproxima os dois países no campo das Ciências Sociais. Nosso esforço é nos fortalecer academicamente, socialmente e institucionalmente.
