L’économie sociale n’est pas un phénomène nouveau. Mais elle connaît un regain d’intérêt depuis les dernières décennies, notamment dans le contexte de la crise économique et des remises en cause profondes qu’elle occasionne. Les différents chapitres du livre rendent compte de l’histoire récente de l’économie sociale au Québec, de ses traits spécifiques sur le plan juridique et du rapport salarial, de ses pratiques en matière de gouvernance et de financement, de ses impacts sur le développement local et le développement durable, de son engagement dans la recherche partenariale. On y constate que les initiatives de l’économie sociale, apparues d’abord à l’échelle locale, se sont multipliées et diffusées, entraînant des effets structurants sur les conditions de vie, le travail et les territoires, ainsi que sur la planification et la mise en œuvre des politiques publiques. Everett C. Hughes had a great impact on the fi eld of sociology as a whole and on an entire generation of sociologists. Some of Hughes' former students and colleagues honor him in this book. Each of the five main divisions in the book covers one aspect of Hughes' work. Th e fi rst deals with the study of occupations and professions--a fi eld in which Hughes was a leader. The second section deals with race relations and other situations in which peoples of diff ering cultures meet.
