About the Book The Passionate Earth is an eco-psychology treatise that portrays the relationship the human species has maintained with planet Earth. It begins with the great transition from hunter-gatherer to agricultural living and follows societal development up to our present disposition of disconnection, discord, exploitation, and our possible extinction in the near future. An interdisciplinary understanding of the events and changes that have shaped our relationship with the Earth are presented in detail, and how they have led to our present ecological crisis. The book brings up the urgency of living in a sustainable manner and how we can change our lifestyles to create a state of harmony and connectedness with the biosphere. The Passionate Earth is an urgent wake-up call intended to promote concerted action to save our environment by all people. As a species, we are in danger of extinction in the next ten years due to our current unsustainable thinking, behavior, and lifestyles. The presentation of the researched materials draws from a wide variety of interdisciplinary sources, both interesting and relevant. It is the intention The Passionate Earth will encourage readers to take our environmental crisis seriously and become good environmental stewards. About the Author John H. This Open access book provides an overview of the cutting-edge research to systematize innovative foundations in algorithmic theories and techniques, and apply them to solve socially significant real-life problems, thereby driving social transformation and advancement. Formulating such social problems into well-defined mathematical or computational terms requires not only a solid theoretical foundation but also a deep understanding of the application domain itself. The content is divided into three parts. Following an introductory chapter in Part I, Part II discusses how to bridge the gap between algorithmic solutions and social advancement. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 present motivating problems that showcase the remarkable performance improvements driven by algorithmic technologies, followed by examples of how interfaces and tools were provided to apply these solutions to real-world challenges. The subsequent Chapters 5 through 12 then focus on interdisciplinary discussions regarding how to formulate real societal issues into a catalog of problems to be addressed. Finally, Part III, spanning Chapters 13 to 23, highlights selected topics on the innovative algorithmic foundations developed through the research project, focusing on intriguing subjects and the latest ongoing research. These include processing large-scale discrete structures, graph algorithms, discrete optimization, quantum algorithms, and various other topics related to algorithmic foundations. This book will serve as a valuable resource for readers interested in the use of algorithms in real-life problems. This book is based on the research project in Japan, Algorithmic Foundations for Social Advancement.

Money and support tend to flow in the direction of economics, science, and other academic departments that demonstrate measurable "progress." The humanities, on the other hand, offer more abstract and uncertain outcomes. A humanist's objects of study are more obscure in certain ways than pathogens and cells. Consequently, it seems as if the humanities never truly progress. Is this a fair assessment? By comparing objects of science, such as the brain, the galaxy, the amoeba, and the quark, with objects of humanistic inquiry, such as the poem, the photograph, the belief, and the philosophical concept, Volney Gay reestablishes a fundamental distinction between science and the humanities. He frees the latter from its pursuit of material-based progress and restores its disciplines to a place of privilege and respect. Using the metaphor of magnification, Gay shows that, while we can investigate natural objects to the limits of imaging capacity, magnifying cultural objects dissolves them into noise. In other words, cultural objects can be studied only within their contexts and through the prism of metaphor and narrative. Gathering examples from literature, art, film, philosophy, religion, science, and psychoanalysis, Gay builds a new justification for the humanities. By revealing the unseen and making abstract ideas tangible, the arts create meaningful wholes, which itself is a form of progress.

This is an open access book.According to Castells, power now rests in networks: “the logic of the network is more powerful than the powers of the network” (quoted in Weber, 2002, p. 104) – it is whether nation states or local communities are deeply affected, especially by inclusion in and exclusion from the global networks that structure a various sectors in society at any level. Thus it is also crucial look closely at exclusion from and inclusion in different kinds of social structures where connectivity and access to networks are essential, being aware that people at the bottom are those who, with nothing to offer the network, are excluded. Castells’ arguments shows us how the new forms of network society offer challenges in a way that despite the disappearance of conventional ties, exploitation, marginalization, exclusion and differentiation remain. In what follows, scholarships are invited to build an academic discussion on characterizing the structure and dynamics of societies in the world of the twenty-first century. Thus, scholar may come to look at the meaning of being in a network society by examining the role of network society within the complexity of socio-cultural, political and economic circumstances in strengthening the role of science in overcoming local, national, regional and global problems. But scientific research is also required to identify a wide variety of solutions to societal problems enhanced by the network society, which no longer relate solely to a particular discipline, but are multi- and trans-disciplinary. In addition, recent research has changed the traditional role of academia, demanding more collaboration in the production of science, not only among universities, but also among researchers, social practitioners and policymakers. Considering these issues, the fourth Asia-Pacific Research in Social Sciences and Humanities (APRiSH) will be hosted by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FISIP UI) in 2019 under the theme The Network Society: Continuity and Change. Scientific inputs from all parts of the world are welcome, academically and practically. Various perspectives, based on mono-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary research are expected to examine the problems and contribute to solutions.

Wonder Value And God written by Robin Attfield and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-15 with Religion categories.

This book relates the value present in the natural world and in human creativity to an underlying purpose which it traces in creation. It opens by invoking the wonder aroused by nature's value and celebrated by poets, and moves to a cosmic purpose as the best explanation of this value. Natural evils are considered and set in their evolutionary context. Human creativity is later related to inspiration, and to traditional theistic teaching about the purpose of human life. Criticisms of "the value approach" are considered, together with the quest for meaning, and fears that Darwinism undermines it, which are found to be illusory. New ground is broken through this response to the spectre of bleakness. The author's previous studies of meaningful work are applied to the question of the nature of a worthwhile life and life's meaning. While the world's value is argued to point to creation by a transcendent lover of value, human beings are shown to be capable of augmenting that value through their creativity (not least through activities such as craftsmanship and gardening). In integrating the themes of value, creativity and purpose, the book contributes a new synthesis to the literature of philosophy, environmental studies and theology.
