Somatostatin was discovered in 1971, by Guillemin and his colleagues during their search for the hypothalamic growth hormone-releasing factor. A peptide was found in ovine hypothalamus which inhibited the release of growth hormone from cultured anterior pituitary cells. 1,2 Determination 3 of its amino acid sequence indicated that it was a tetradecapeptide with a molecular weight of 1639 (Figure lJ. An identical peptide was later isolated from porcine hypothalamus by Schally and his coworkers. 4 The peptide was named somatostatin in the belief that it was a hypothalamic releasing factor whose sole function was to inhibit the secretion of growth hormone. It soon became evident, however, that a peptide with identical immunologic characteristics and biologic activity was present in the D cells of pancreatic islets, in D-like cells of the gastrointestinal tract, in parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland, and in extrahypo thalamic neurons of both the central and peripheral nervous system in various species, including man. Moreover, studies employing synthetic somatostatin5 demonstrated that the peptide possessed a wide spectrum of biologic activities in addition to its inhibition of growth hormone. 56 S 0 MAT 0 S TAT I N 6 1 2 3 4 5 7 Ala-Gly-Cys-Lys-Asn-Phe-Phe I I S Trp 8 ~ L~S 9 I I Cys-Ser-Thr-Phe-Thr 14 13 12 11 10 FIG. 1: Structure of somatostatin 57 II. GENERAL DISTRIBUTION AND ACTIONS Somatostatin is widely distributed within both the central and peripheral nervous systems and in various other tissues (Table 1).

Advances in Steroid Biochemistry and Pharmacology, Volume 4 provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of steroid biochemistry and pharmacology. This book covers a variety of topics, including cellular biochemistry, pituitary hormones, corticosteroids, and steroid hormones. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the potential effects of steroids on cellular biochemistry. This text then examines the development of sleep-monitoring methods, together with methods of plasma sampling that enable very frequent specimen to be taken without disturbing the subject. Other chapters consider the usefulness of sleep-related growth hormone release in diagnosis in both children and adult. This book discusses as well the versatile effect of corticosteroids on the cellular components of the connective tissue. The final chapter deals with the functioning of the adrenal cortex and its control by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). This book is a valuable resource for biochemists, histochemists, biologists, pharmacologists, clinicians, and experimental endocrinologists.

This volume covers contemporary advances in five important areas of pharmacology and medicinal chemistry including: a comprehensive account of inhibitors of the caspase family of proteolytic enzymes that represent a new class of anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic agents of potential value in rheumatoid arthritis, and other peripheral and central indications; adoc umented survey of semi-synthetic and totally synthetic antibiotics and anti HIV agents and their sites of interaction; inhibitors of the intracellular enzyme acyl-CoA: cholesterol O-acyltransferase (ACAT) developed for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia; and recent progress in growth hormone secretagogues, with the focus on strategies to improve oral bioavailability and duration of action. Inhibition of the proteolytic enzyme, hepatitis C protease N-3(NS3), required for viral replication, is one of the most attractive targets for HCV infections. Progress and prospects in the design of peptide and non-peptide inhibitors are described here. design and clinical potential of new drug molecules; valuable summaries of structure-activity relationships in topical areas of medicinal chemistry; and extensive references to the biology, medicinal chemistry and clinical aspects of each topic.

Stjärne: The present review puts the emphasis on two important developments: the discovery that individual postganglionic sympathetic neurons may secrete multiple transmitter substances from different classes of vesicles and by different mechanisms, and the introduction of new techniques which may permit for the first time direct impulse by impulse analysis of transmitter secretion in individual sympathetic nerve varicosities. Illes: Exogenous and endogen opioid peptides elicit a number of effects in the organism, usually by modifying the function of transmitter and hormone systems, for example, activation of multiple opioid receptors. The effects of opioids on transmitter and hormone release have frequently been reviewed. This review gives a detailed overview on the involvement of multiple opioid receptors in these processes. Rothstein: This article gives an overview of the exchange in acidification and transepithelial salt and water transfer in nonepithelial cells. Delineating the exchanger's most important, common features, and concentrating particularly on its role in cell pH and volume regulation.

First published in 1943, Vitamins and Hormones is the longest-running serial published by Academic Press. In the early days of the serial, the subjects of vitamins and hormones were quite distinct. The Editorial Board now reflects expertise in the field of hormone action, vitamin action, X-ray crystal structure, physiology, and enzyme mechanisms. Under the capable and qualified editorial leadership of Dr. Gerald Litwack, Vitamins and Hormones continues to publish cutting-edge reviews of interest to endocrinologists, biochemists, nutritionists, pharmacologists, cell biologists, and molecular biologists. Others interested in the structure and function of biologically active molecules like hormones and vitamins will, as always, turn to this series for comprehensive reviews by leading contributors to this and related disciplines.
