Excerpt from Progress of Art, in the Century The original scheme of this book was to narrate the development of the arts in the nineteenth century, if possible, organically and proportionately. But after this scheme was prepared, and some of the book done, I found it advisable to relinquish an intention that could not be realised adequately without making this volume simply an uninteresting textbook of statistics. It seemed to me wiser to embody much of what might be said sectionally in one long preliminary part - for Art does not grow this way in England or America, or that way in France or Germany or Holland, but is continually and inevitably interrelated. Thus, in treating at great length of the many phases of British Art, since Gainsborough's death and the appearance of Constable and Turner, to the Impressionists of to-day, I have really treated of the phases of modern art in America, in France, in all Europe. To write the history of modern French Art one would have to begin with Constable. All that is greatest in contemporary art derives from this great English master. Towards the end of the 18th century, the efforts of Mengs succeeded by those of the French painter David, both aiming at a return to a dead classicism, a revival of Grecian forms, with which the age could have no intimate sympathy, led to nothing better than the style of the Napoleon era; which, except as marking an historical epoch, is utterly contemptible. In the meantime, Reynolds, in England, had once more made a direct appeal to nature, from which, notwithstanding the mannerism he adopted in carrying it out, European art may date its second revival; for, although the painting of the French "romantic" school, who have superseded the frigid Grecianisms of David and his followers, cannot be termed imitators of the initiative given by Reynolds, they were yet, chronologically speaking, his followers. Reynolds's attempt was considered absurd by the artists in vogue at the time; and Ellis, the fashionable portrait painter of the day, is reported to have attempted to drive him from his new course, by exclaiming "Shakspeare in poetry, Sir, and Kneller in painting!" a juxta-position which Reynolds was, however, not willing to allow. Immediately following Reynolds were portrait painters, such as Opie and others, who followed his style; but the frigid compositions of West, for whose works the really great genius of Barry was neglected, were in vogue at the same time, and though Northcote promised better things, the taste for the chilly monotonous works of Westall, Howard, and others, prevailed.
