The Benton Road ran from Fort Benton to Helena, Montana. It was the life line for settlers, miners and the military during Montana's pioneering days. Freight and pioneers would board steamships at St Joseph, Missouri and travel the Missouri River to Fort Benton. From there it was up to this road and its feeder roads to provide the people and goods necessary for settling and mining the vast wealth contained in that portion of the Rocky Mountains. Freight wagons, and caravans of people would travel the road. Eventually, stagecoach travel was added to the traffic along the way.

Wanton West written by Lael Morgan and has been published by Chicago Review Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-01 with History categories.

From the time of the gold rush to the election of the first woman to the U.S. Congress, Wanton West brings to life the women of the West's wildest region: Montana, famous for its lawlessness, boomtowns, and America's largest red-light districts. Prostitutes and entrepreneurs--like Chicago Joe, Madame Mustache, and Highkicker—flocked to Montana to make their own money, gamble, drink, and raise hell just like men. Moralists wrote them off as “soiled doves,” yet a surprising number prospered, flaunting their freedom and banking ten times more than their “respectable” sisters. A lively read providing new insights into women's struggle for equality, Wanton West is a refreshingly objective exploration of a freewheeling society and a re-creation of an unforgettable era in history.

At three times the size of Pennsylvania, with a county bigger than the whole state of Connecticut, Montana is a large place, once described as "bounded on the west by the Japan current, on the north by the aurora borealis, on the south by Price's Army, and on the east by the Day of Judgement." Montana has a rich story, in which different people have sought both great fortune and modest prosperity. How well they succeeded is part of the story told in this engaging history.
