Graduate research is a complicated process which many engineering and science students aspire to undertake. The complexity of the process can lead to failures for even the most brilliant students. Success with graduate level research requires not only a high level of intellectual ability, but also a high level of program management skills. After many years of supervising several graduate students, I have found that most of them have the same basic problems of planning and implementing their research programs. Even the advanced graduate students need the same 'mentoring and management' guidance that has little to do with actual classroom performance. It is my conjecture that graduate students could make a better job of their research programs if a self-paced guide were available to them. The guide provided in this book covers topics ranging from how to select an appropriate research problem to how to schedule and execute research tasks. The book takes a project management approach to planning and implementing graduate research in engineering, science and manufacturing disciplines. It is a self paced guide that will help graduate students and advisors answer most of the basic questions about 'how to do this and how to do that'. There is a need for such a guide book. The book will alleviate frustration on the part of the student and the research advisor.

All the contributions to this volume are condensed versions of research projects undertaken by students in the final year of the online Master of Project Management degree delivered by the University of South Australia in conjunction with Open Universities Australia. Contributors to this book consist primarily of graduated Masters’ students, supported by supervising academics and relevant industry specialists and practitioners. As a result, the authors present current research interests across the breadth of Australia – with many of the perspectives demonstrating relevance to practice globally. The research perspectives presented here focus on four key themes of project management theory and practice: people and organisations; methodologies and practice domains; issues in application; and continuous improvement and benchmarking. Collectively, this work will be of particular interest to project management academics and researchers, post-graduate students, and the broader project management community.

Although there are many books on project management, few address the issues associated with scientific research. This work is based on extensive scientific research and management experiences and is designed to provide an introduction to planning and managing scientific research for the beginning researcher. The aim is to build an understanding of the nature of scientific research, and the way in which research projects can be developed, planned and managed to a successful outcome. The book is designed to help the transition from being a member of a research team to developing a project and making them work, and to provide a framework for future work. The emphasis of the book is on broadly applicable principles that can be of value irrespective of discipline. It should be of value to researchers in the later stages of Ph.D. work and Postdoctoral workers, and also for independent researchers.

Though project management can be traced back thousands of years, it is only recently that organizations have begun to apply systematic and scientific tools and techniques to manage complex projects. Recently, researchers and practitioners have adapted different academic disciplines to contribute to the body of knowledge in project management. Such disciplines as network scheduling techniques, decision-making tools, resource allocations and optimization approaches come from the Management Science discipline. Organizational dynamics theories provide insight and recognize the benefits of project driven organizations. Supply chain management and business process outsourcing have also impacted organizational effectiveness and attitude on managing projects. Project management is greatly affected by allied disciplines and in return, it influences them. Therefore, innovative theories, trends and challenges discovered through investigating allied disciplines of project management have important implications and allocations in the future of project management. Impact on Project Management of Allied Disciplines is a collection of academic studies related to trends in allied disciplines of project management and how they might significantly impact project management in the future.
