'This volume is an important step in furthering the discussion about how cluster strategies work and the implications for theory and policy.' – Jennifer Clark, Review of Regional Studies The role of innovations and clusters has increasingly dominated local and regional development policies in recent decades. This authoritative and accessible Handbook considers important aspects of high-tech clusters, analyses insightful cluster case studies, and provides a number of recommendations for cluster policies. The chapters in this Handbook are written by international experts in the field and present evidence of the scope, effects, and potential of clusters as concentrations of innovative activities. The authors emphasize that cluster development is not the only option for local and regional development and argue that for cluster policies to be worthwhile, supporting policies in fields such as education, R&D, transportation, and communication infrastructure must accompany most cluster policies. Furthermore, several contributions stress that clusters often develop along a life cycle that may end with decline and even the disappearance of clusters. Consequently, this Handbook provides the basis for improving both research on innovation and clusters and the formulation and implementation of cluster policies. Furnishing the reader with rich, comprehensive discussion of innovations and clusters, this Handbook will be an essential source for researchers and academics in the field, as well as policymakers, planners and specialists, development experts and agencies, and consultants.

Since the pioneering work scholars such as Joseph Schumpeter and Peter Drucker, the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship have evolved to become two separate and distinct disciplines. Schumpeter 1 focused on the contributions of entrepreneurial startups and smaller firms, whereas Schumpeter 2 emphasized the role of formal research, development and industrial innovation in larger firms. Unfortunately, the study and practice of each field has suffered as a result: entrepreneurship has become preoccupied with individual entrepreneurs and small business creation, and innovation is dominated by corporate R&D and new product development. Promoting Innovation in New Ventures and Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) aims to bridge these two fields by examining innovation in new ventures and SMEs. This book identifies themes which can reunite the study and practice of entrepreneurship and innovation by examining a potentially bridging phenomenon. The focus here is on high growth, innovative SMEs, and the interactions between SMEs and larger organizations, private and public. It is organized around three overlapping themes: SME innovation performance, practices and networks. Contents: Introduction (Joe Tidd)SME Innovation and Performance: Innovation and Growth in the city Region: Microeconomic Evidence of Asymmetries (David Devins, George Lodorfos, Ioannis Kostopoulos and Don Webber)Innovation and Organizational Size in Irish SMES: An Empirical Study (Rodney McAdam, Renee S Reid and David A Gibson)Effects of Product Innovation and Organizational Capabilities on Competitive Advantage: Evidence from UK Small and Medium Manufacturing Enterprises (Ana Christina O Siqueira and Andy D Cosh)Intellectual Capital, Innovation and Performance: Empirical Evidence from SMEs (Karl-Heinz Leitner)Fast-Growing SMEs and the Role of Innovation (Christina Grundström, Roland Sjöström, Anders Uddenberg and Anna Öhrwall Rönnbäck)Perceived Competition and Innovative Intentions in Dutch Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (Jeroen P J De Jong)The Impact of Environmental Uncertainty Dimensions on Organizational Innovativeness: An Empirical Study on SMEs (Cevahir Uzkurt, Rachna Kumar, Halil Semih Kimzan and Hanife Sert)SME Practices for Innovation: A Model of Organizational Innovation Implementation Effectiveness in Small to Medium Firms (Sukanlaya Sawang and Kerrie L Unsworth)A Study of Organizational Determinants and Innovation Practices in Dubai SMEs (Yahya Al-Ansari, Jun Xu and Simon Pervan)Perspectives on Innovation Management of Ecuadorian Companies: Empirical Evidence (Guillermo Javier Diaz-Villavicencio, Simone Didonet and Alexander Dodd)The Relationship between Top Management Team Innovation Orientation and Firm Growth: The Mediating Role of Firm Innovativeness (Nils D Kraiczy, Andreas Hack, Franz W Kellermanns)Organizational Learning, Non-Technical Innovation and Customer Satisfaction of SMEs (Dimitrios Kafetzopoulos and Evangelos Psomas)What's Small Size Got to do with it? Innovation is the motor of economic change. Over the last fifteen years, researches in innovation processes have emphasised the systemic features of innovation. Whilst innovation system analysis traditionally takes a static institutional approach, cluster analysis focuses on interaction and the dynamics of technology and innovation. First, the volume gives an overview of the different levels of analysis from which the innovation behaviour of firms has been observed in the past. The book then presents a distinct cluster approach as a useful and innovative tool to analyse the configuration and dynamics of networks of actors involved in innovative processes. This approach emphasises the possibilities of enhancing cluster benefits by introducing virtual links between cluster actors. Empirical evidence is provided for the automotive components and the telecommunication industries. By restricting the discussion to Germany and Italy, the authors are able to explore the role that national innovation systems play as a framework in which clusters operate.

Recent economic transformations in the world economy are progressing in two divergent directions – international production fragmentation and industrial agglomeration. Based on extensive data analysis and using models of interdependencies between key economies, this book analyses innovation systems that cross national borders. It is shown that technological complexity is an important factor in the formation of highly specific production networks, and why, for a number of production systems, fragmentation and clustering are two sides of the same coin. By outlining the picture of a world economy structured around networks of clusters and joined together through systems of linkages of components, people and knowledge flows, the author helps to promote a better understanding of recent economic transformations.

Using international examples, leading scholars present the first critical analysis of cluster theory, assessing the cluster notion and drawing out, not only its undoubted strengths and attractions, but also its weaknesses and limitations. Over the past decade the ‘cluster model’ has been seized on as a tool for promoting competitiveness, innovation and growth on local, regional and national scales. However, despite its popularity there is much about it that is problematic, and in some respects the rush to employ ‘cluster ideas’ has run ahead of many fundamental conceptual, theoretical and empirical questions. Addressing key questions on the nature, use and effectiveness of cluster models, Clusters and Regional Development provides the missing thorough theoretical and empirical evaluation.

This book aims to bind together latest theories on creation of innovative clusters and operating modalities, empirical analysis, and several new formal models describing cluster formation and dynamics. Another objective of the book is the analysis of the role of the innovative activities on the economic performances of the firm during the crisis, focusing the attention on the complementarities existing among the innovative dimensions, hypothesizing a positive role of integrated innovative strategies in increasing the firm resilience to the challenges brought by the economic crisis. The part of empirical analysis contains a comprehensive survey of different international legislation sources useful for deep studies of influential factors and peculiarities. In this book international statistical reports on economic activity and business cases of successful application of clusters model are described for Western Europe and BRIC. This book also presents authors findings in the domain of mathematical and simulation modeling of the major elements of cluster and innovation management.
