La subordination de la pratique professionnelle infirmière à la détermination du rôle joué par "l'infirmière" amène à s'interroger sur les raisons des difficultés rencontrées pour identifier la prestation et le service infirmier. Ce livre est le long parcours d'un chemin enfoui dans les ombres d'un lointain passé, mais débouchant sur le temps d'aujourd'hui afin de mieux saisir la trame de ce qui prélude aux tout récents "soins infirmiers". Plus particulièrement élaborée par les femmes, autour de la fécondité, la fonction soignante a vu sa conception se modifier profondément avec l'avènement de l'ère chrétrienne et l'émergence de la médecine "scientifique". Dépouillée de ses savoirs, privée d'un renouvellement de connaissances, éclatée en tâches dissociées, la fonction soignante devient une fonction subalterne dépourvue de sa valeur sociale et économique, jusqu'au jour où sous l'impact de la pression médicale elle se transforme en fonction "traitante". A l'insu des soignants, enfermés dans un rôle prescrivant "les conduites à tenir", les soins changent en traitement, ne gardant que leur dénomination, mais perdant l'essentiel de leur raison d'être. Pourtant, "prendre soin de la vie" demeure tout aussi vital pour les hommes d'aujourd'hui que pour ceux d'hier. Qui assumera cette fonction irremplaçable dont nulle part au monde on ne saurait se passer? Cette voie est ouverte à la profession infirmière qui après un siècle de professionnalisation cherche encore son identité : l'indentité de son champ de compétence, l'identité des soins infirmiers
