Unlike the trial writings Apology and Kriton, however, this is not to be classified as a historical document, which is primarily concerned with a realistic reproduction. This is indicated on the one hand by the fact that the narrator states that he himself was not present on the day of his death, and on the other hand by the literary form chosen, in which a spatial and temporal distance is established from the events. Plato's main concern in Phaidon is rather to prove the immortality of the soul. In order to provide this proof, he has Socrates present four proofs of immortality, which will be the subject of this work. In these proofs, Plato makes use of his central philosophical concepts: the doctrine of ideas and the doctrine of recollection.

Of course, by scientific is meant the light of reason applied to the phenomena of life - not a demonstration by means of the microscope or balances. It will assuredly place it upon a much firmer basis than that enjoyed by many of the accepted scientific hypotheses, such as those which attempt to prove the existence and functions of the ether, atoms, matter itself, etc. Certainly, there can be no topic of greater or more profound interest to the human mind than that of its own survival after death. But, as is so often the case, the proof has been sought for afar when it lay immediately at hand; has been accredited to divine revelation in books, instead of to divine revelations in nature. Their existence is certainly dual. They have instinct, sensation, and they reason on a certain plane of consciousness. But whether immortal or not, they deserve our tenderest care. Surgeons, intelligent, up-to-date men in psychology, are well aware that in amputating a limb they do not remove the invisible, the more substantial, spiritual limb. There is a peculiar worm - the nais - which, when cut into several sections, will reproduce itself from every section, showing conclusively that there was a vital entity in each section capable of reproducing this re-growth. Amputate the leg of a salamander, and it will be reproduced to the minutest details, joints, veins, nerves. And why? Because the real entity - the invisible leg - was not removed.
