Following victory in World War II, the US and Western Europe claimed to be the champions of the political ideals of democracy and freedom, along with the economic ideal of free market capitalism. Two decades into the twenty-first century, these once noble ideals have been reduced to little more than myths - myths that bear scant resemblance to the realities of the powerful political and economic forces that dominate the Western world. This book examines the dangerous prospects we face as the societies built upon these myths begin to fragment and crumble. In an open and accessible style, this book argues that much of the confusion that currently plagues the West is due to the fact that its social, economic and political systems are saturated by a little understood and rarely acknowledged system of propaganda. This book seeks to clear away this propagandistic façade in order to reveal where power really lies in Western societies, examining how this power functions and how it has corrupted the ideals of democracy, freedom and capitalism to suit its own ends. This volume will be of value to those interested in modern history and social and political history.

As the world evolves in increasingly unpredictable directions, one of the key determinants of the future global order will surely be the impact of China. No country and no society can escape China's reach-indeed many seek its embrace. China brings benefits to many-but it's also a problematic interlocutor for others. In China and the World, one of the world's leading China specialists David Shambaugh has assembled fifteen leading international authorities on China to create the most comprehensive and up-to-date scholarly assessment of China's foreign relations and roles in international affairs. The volume covers China's contemporary position in all regions of the world, with all major powers, and across multiple arenas of China's international interactions. It also explores the sources of China's grand strategy, how the past shapes the present, and the impact of domestic factors that shape China's external behavior. China and the World is a uniquely focused and well-organized volume that provides many insights into China's calculations and behavior, and identifies a number of challenges China will face in the future.

From the pre-eminent scholar of foreign policy, a guide to soft power: the ability of governments to attract and persuade, rather than coerce by force Joseph S. Nye, Jr. coined the term “soft power” to describe a nation’s ability to attract and persuade. Whereas hard power—the ability to coerce— grows out of a country’s military or economic might, soft power arises from the attractiveness of its culture, political ideals, and policies. Hard power remains crucial in a world of states trying to guard their independence. But Nye argues that soft power – diplomacy, economic assistance, trustworthy information -- is essential as well in securing America’s national interests. One of the most influential books on foreign policy every written, Soft Power offers vital guidance in an age of geopolitical turmoil.

As China becomes more deeply engaged with the outside world its propaganda authorities confront a dilemma: how can they maintain domestic ideological cohesion in the face of an influx of foreign information and ideas while also convincing skeptical international audiences that China's rise is a good news story? This book examines the Chinese propaganda system in the era of globalization, exploring connections between the Chinese Communist Party's desire for domestic political control and its vision for the development of China's international power. Investigating areas such as Chinese attitudes to soft power, the recent international expansion of the Chinese media, and the authorities' reaction to public opinion crises at home and abroad, Edney shows that in order to understand Chinese attempts to influence international views it is necessary to examine the power of propaganda in China's domestic political system.

This volume presents insights on the challenges of digital communication and participation in agricultural and rural development. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that digital technology and mediated participation is more important and essential in managing ongoing communication for development projects than ever before. However, it has also underscored the various challenges and gaps in knowledge with digital participatory practices, including the further exclusion of marginalized groups and those with limited access to digital technology. The book considers how the concept of participation has been transformed by the realities of the pandemic, reflecting on essential principles and practical considerations of communication for development and social change, particularly in the context of global agriculture and food security, the well-being of rural communities, and evolving environmental challenges, such as climate change. In gathering these insights, this volume highlights lessons for the future of participatory development in communication for development and social change processes. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of agricultural and rural development, communication for development, digital communication, and sustainable development more broadly.

Chinese Public Diplomacy written by Falk Hartig and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-27 with Political Science categories.
This book presents the first comprehensive analysis of Confucius Institutes (CIs), situating them as a tool of public diplomacy in the broader context of China’s foreign affairs. The study establishes the concept of public diplomacy as the theoretical framework for analysing CIs. By applying this frame to in-depth case studies of CIs in Europe and Oceania, it provides in-depth knowledge of the structure and organisation of CIs, their activities and audiences, as well as problems, challenges and potentials. In addition to examining CIs as the most prominent and most controversial tool of China’s charm offensive, this book also explains what the structural configuration of these institutes can tell us about China’s understanding of and approaches towards public diplomacy. The study demonstrates that, in contrast to their international counterparts, CIs are normally organised as joint ventures between international and Chinese partners in the field of education or cultural exchange. From this unique setting a more fundamental observation can be made, namely China’s willingness to engage and cooperate with foreigners in the context of public diplomacy. Overall, the author argues that by utilizing the current global fascination with Chinese language and culture, the Chinese government has found interested and willing international partners to co-finance the CIs and thus partially fund China’s international charm offensive. This book will be of much interest to students of public diplomacy, Chinese politics, foreign policy and international relations in general.
