This report summarizes the information generated since the middle of 1961 on the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of refractory metals that are coated with oxidation-resistant coatings of advanced-experimental or commercial status. It is a supplement to DMIC Report 162, Coatings for the Protection of Refractory Metals from Oxidation, dated November 24, 1961. Recent data on specific silicide- and aluminide- type coatings for columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten and their alloys reflect general advances in coating quality and performance, understanding of the behavior of coated systems, and more complete realization of the problems associated with the use of coated hardware.

A set of test procedures which could be used uniformly to compare coating systems is described. The intent of these procedures is to compare the oxidation resistance of coated refractory metal sheet and the effect of a coating on the mechanical properties of the sheet. Deviations from these procedures will make meaningful comparison and evaluation difficult or impossible. Therefore, deviations must be reported and justified. An important variable which significantly influences oxidation resistance and mechanical properties is coating thickness. A 'typical' coating thickness should be applied to specimens for both oxidation and mechanical property tests so that comparisons will be meaningful.

Chemical vapor deposition investigations were undertaken to determine the feasibility of coating refractory metals and alloys onto the inside bores of gun barrels. Coatings of tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, rhenium, and tantalum as well as tungsten alloys were attempted. Process parameters, compositions, and properties of the coatings were determined. Elemental tungsten depositions were initially used to establish the process parameters for subsequent work on tungsten alloy coatings. Ta-10W alloy was plated successfully on the steel substrate at 750 C and 1 atmosphere pressure. The coatings obtained were uniform and adherent. Properties of the alloy coating, Ta-10W, are such that this coating is especially applicable for a high temperature coating for fun barrels. (Author).

This publication documents Proceedings of the Symposium on Metal lurgy and Technology of Refractory Metal Alloys, held in Washington, D.C. at the Washington Hilton Hotel on April 25-26, 1968, under sponsorship of the Refractory Metals Committee, Institute of Metals Division, of the Metallurgical Society of AIME, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Symposium presented critical reviews of selected topics in refractory metal alloys, thereby contributing to an in-depth understanding of the state-of-the-art, and establishing a base line for further research, development, and application. This Symposium is fifth in a series of conferences on refractory metals, sponsored by the Metallurgical Society of AlME. Publications issuing from the conferences are valuable technical and historical source books, tracing the evolution of refractory metals from early laboratory alloying studies to their present status as useful engineering materials. Refractory metals are arbitrarily defined by melting point. A 0 melting temperature of over 3500 F was selected as the minimum for this Symposium, thus excluding chromium and vanadium, which logically could be treated with other refractory metals in Groups VA and VIA of the periodic table. The Refractory Metals Committee is planning reviews of chromium and vanadium in subsequent conferences.

The properties of materials depend on the characteristics of the bulk and on those of the surf ace. Any change in surface characteristics affects a wide variety of material properties. During the last few years the role of surface phenomena in metallurgy has been the subject of many studies. Surface energy, surface tension, the activity of surfaces, and related problems are under discussion in the western world * as well as in the eastern world. t The relation between volume and surface properties in metals and alloys has been investigated and is still under investigation. Materials are frequently exposed to environments which change their physical and chemical characteristics on account of a reaction going on between the material surface and the environment. The science and technology of surface preparation ro improve material properties have gained importance during the last decade in many parts of the world. Main efforts have been concentrated especially on the coating of material surfaces in connection with the exposure of these materials to space en vironment.

Studies on the effects of heat-treating and testing environments for the refractory metals have been limited primarily to the unalloyed metals and a few alloys of columbium and molybdenum. Most of this work has relied on compositional changes as a means of assesing the effects of various environments on these materials. It has been shown that all of these materials are subject to contamination or purification in various test environments. The residual gases H2, CO(or N2), and H20, constitute the major sources of contamination when testing columbium and tantalum materials in vacua. Under the same conditions, molybdenum and molybdenum alloys containing carbon and reactive-metal additions are subject to serious decarburization. Nonreactive gaseous atmospheres also cause serious changes in material chemistry, since small quantities of noxious gases are contained in the atmosphere. Several promising methods of circumventing material chemistry changes during various longtime, high-temperature exposures are being used and/or evaluated. (Author).
