In Proportions and Cognition in Architecture and Urban Design, practicing architects, historians, and theoreticians discuss the proportional systems that juxtapose aesthetic judgements, forms of practice, and human and social bodies with the norms and ideals that have resulted from these relationships. They retrace the history of these proportional systems, the expectations with which they were associated, how they were introduced into design, and how contemporary practice builds upon this tradition-or allows new interpretations to unfold.

This unique volume presents the practical tools for architects and urban designers to improve the work processes of architectural design—from conception to construction, taking into consideration the personalized world of users, architects, and urban designers. The volume starts from the conception of architectural space as a continuum that goes from the subjective depth of the mind to the objective reality, taking into consideration the perspective of building experiences for users. It is based on the idea that at the heart of that continuum is the experience of architecture and the city as the element that unites them and gives them meaning. The volume first defines what the architectural experience is from the processes of perception, cognition, and evaluation that users and architects make about workplaces and programs. It goes on to consider the knowledge and tools needed for the evaluation of users and places, providing the methods that will help to understand the architectural experience desired by the main users of both the architectural object and an urban design, providing a series of techniques that have proven effective. Key features: Describes the theoretical approaches, methods, and tools necessary for architectural and urban design for creating experiences for users Provides a deep understanding of the nature of built environments and what they express Discusses specific methods for in-depth research on users’ subjective space through making meaningful contact with them and through appropriate technological means, such as research on their expressions and communications on virtual social networks This book will help to make urban architects and designers aware of their importance for the implementation of public policies that will work in the very long term, with the expectation that by becoming aware of this role, they can act in accordance with an ethic based on values of protection of life, human solidarity, compassion, vitality, freedom, equality between people and social justice.

Embracing a biological and evolutionary perspective to explain the human experience of place, Urban Experience and Design explores how cognitive science and biometric tools provide an evidence-based foundation for architecture and planning. Aiming to promote the creation of a healthier and happier public realm, this book describes how unconscious responses to stimuli, outside our conscious awareness, direct our experience of the built environment and govern human behavior in our surroundings. This collection contains 15 chapters, including contributions from researchers in the US, the UK, the Netherlands, France and Iran. Addressing topics such as the impact of eye-tracking analysis and seeing beauty and empathy within buildings, Urban Experience and Design encourages us to reframe our understanding of design, including the narrative of how modern architecture and planning came to be in the first place. This volume invites students, academics and scholars to see how cognitive science and biometric findings give us remarkable 21st-century metrics for evaluating and improving designs, even before they are built.

How can we develop a scientific basis for architectural, urban and technical design? When can a design be labelled as scientific output, comparable with a scientific report? What are the similarities and dis-similarities between design and empirical research, and between design research, typological research, design study and study by design? Is there a need for a particular methodology for design driven study and research? With these questions in mind, more than forty members of the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology have described their ways of study and research. Each chapter shows the objectives, the methodology and its implementation in search for a deeper knowledge of design processes and an optimal quality of the design itself. The authors - among them architects, urban planners, social scientists, lawyers, technicians and information scientists – have widely differing backgrounds. Nevertheless, they share a great deal. The central focus is a better understanding of design processes, design tools and the effects of design interventions on issues such as utility, aesthetics meaning, sustainability and feasibility.

What consequences does the design of the virtual yield for architecture and to what extent can the nature of architecture be used productively to turn game-worlds into sustainable places - over here, in »reality«? This pioneering collection gives an overview of contemporary developments in designing video games and of the relationships such practices have established with the design of architecture. Due to their often simulatory nature, games reveal constructions of reality while positively impacting spatial ability and allowing for alternative avenues to complex topics and processes of negotiation. Granting insight into the merging of the design of real and virtual environments, this volume offers an invaluable platform for further debate.

The work of the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect Hans van der Laan (1904–1991) offers important insights into the ways in which artifacts address the complexity of human physical, cognitive, and social needs. Van der Laan developed a number of powerful lines of thought, three of which are introduced here: the search for a theory of architecture; the establishment of a three-dimensional system of proportions named Plastic Number; and analogy as the mainspring of human thinking. This triad of deeply interconnected intellectual strategies represents his most important ‘instruments of thought’ and is rooted in the careful observation of phenomena as they are presented to us rather than relying on conventional beliefs. Van der Laan's instruments of thought lead us to reconsider the origins of human creation, urging a deeper examination of our perceptual and cognitive response to the limitlessness of the surrounding environment. On this basis, Van der Laan develops a unique philosophy of culture and design that includes considerations on the relationship between nature, culture, and religious ritual. Although this book is informative, its principal aim is to be formative. On the basis of Van der Laan’s instruments of thought, the authors develop a methodology to explore the Plastic Number theory and the many ways in which we perceive and interpret proportion. Reintroducing playful creativity and intellectual exploration into architectural pedagogy and design practice, this book is a gateway for a deeper understanding of the effects of the built environment on human behavior and the various ways in which the human mind perceives and decodes artifacts.

Urban Design Method And Techniques written by Rafael Cuesta and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-11 with Architecture categories.

This book deals with a wide range of techniques used in the urban design process. It then goes on to relate these techniques to a unique, comprehensive account of method. A method of urban design is developed which has sustainability and environmental protection at the centre of its philosophy. Previously, literature regarding the urban design method has been almost totally neglected; this book introduces the topic to the reader. This revised Second Edition encompasses the latest techniques including the development of geographic information systems and financial techniques which help evaluate projects. A number of techniques are illustrated by example or case study. Where techniques are discussed they are located within the structure of the design process. The book develops a logical framework for a process, which includes problem definition, survey, analysis, concept generation, evaluation and implementation. It is this framework which leads toward the development of an urban design method. This book is a practical guide for students or professionals in the early part of their careers. It is organized so that each chapter provides guidance which readers would have otherwise had to discover for themselves, often with some difficulty.
