El Tolima fue creado por el general Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera el 12 de abril de 1.863 después de haberse rebelado contra el gobierno de Mariano Ospina Rodriguez segregando al estado del Cauca de la confederación Granadina para dar fundación a lo que hoy hemos conocido como el "Tolima Grande" que eran constituidos por la Provincia de Mariquita y de Neiva en los tiempos de la colonia española cuando hacían parte del virreinato del Perú y un poco después como La Nueva Granada. También hay que decir que el general Manuel Casabianca fue nombrado por el propio Rafael Nuñez como primer gobernador del Tolima debido a su exitosa campaña para liberar al departamento de los liberales radicales. Esa lucha intestina entre los patriotas que nos dieron la libertad generadas por las rivalidades de familias y de poder sobre lo que debía ser el reciente Estado que hoy conocemos como Colombia, han ocasionado muchas guerras fratricidas que en su tiempo lo mismo que las ideas sobre Centralismo y Federalismo en el siglo XIX produjeron social y económicamente varias constituciones políticas que expresaban las ideas que bullían sobre la forma de gobernar en el mundo. También al "Tolima Grande" hay muchos que incluyen al Caquetá debido a que en la violencia de mediados del siglo XX muchos tolimenses y huilenses migraron a este Departamento como colonos a estas tierras, pues en los tiempos de la colonización española sus aborígenes se libraron de ser conquistados por lo inhóspito de ellas.
