This volume addresses highly topical issues at a crucial time in international economic relations. The world has never been closer to dismantling the liberal multilateral trading system which has been painstakingly established and successfully operated since the Second World War. In this volume many of the world's most distinguished economists examine the movement toward protectionism, bilateralism, and regionalism, and its causes, effects, and possible solutions. The contributors are theorists, researchers, and advisors to governments and international organizations who are at the forefront of trade theory, policy, and practice, and whose analyses have a real impact on international trade. By collecting together these analyses in a single volume, this book provides a unique survey for students and scholars of economics, and all those concerned with trade theory and policy in business and government.

Limits To Globalization written by Elmar Rieger and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-07-09 with Political Science categories.

In this exciting new book, Rieger and Leibfried argue persuasively for the need to understand developments in welfare and social provision alongside the processes of globalization. In the two decades following the Second World War, the massive expansion of the welfare state system arguably allowed Western governments to expose their societies to uncontrollable external risks associated with the deregulated global economic environment. The authors contend that the combination of changes in welfare and technological innovation provided the necessary conditions for globalization by limiting some of the more harmful effects of economic change. Today, the developed welfare state is in need of reform for various endogenous reasons. If such reforms are to work effectively, however, Rieger and Leibfried claim that governments must take into account the complex ways in which domestic social policy and external economic policy are interconnected. They maintain that the present climate provides a unique opportunity for policy-makers to engage constructively with globalization, warning that failure to think creatively about welfare in this context could result in governments falling back into an unhelpful and out-moded protectionist stance. Drawing on case studies from Germany and the United States, Rieger and Leibfried show how welfare reform has worked in practice in the Western world. Contrasting these findings with the experience of East Asian states, they go on to argue that whilst welfare systems may appear to be similar, they function in different ways depending on the cultural setting. These cultural differences may condition the way in which welfare state regimes are able to mitigate the effects of globalization upon particular societies and economies.

Trade Policy Protectionism And The Third World written by Michael Davenport and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-10 with Business & Economics categories.

The 1980s saw an alarming revival of protectionism among Western countries, as a result of a decade of persistent economic crises, slow growth, industrial decline and rising unemployment. The two major actors, the US and the European Community, between them bore the major responsibility for the breakdown of the liberal world trading system. Protection in the 1970s and 1980s took the form of replacing free international markets by bilateral agreements. This book, first published in 1986, examines the European Community’s Generalized System of Preferences, whereby the manufactured exports of developing nations would have duty-free access to the markets of the EEC, and the consequences to this System of the new protectionism.

The second edition of this classic text on international economics includes three completely new chapters on the environment and trade policy, strategic trade policy, and the relationship between trade policy and the exchange rate. The first edition introduced a number of ideas into policy circles; the new edition has been shortened and substantially revised to point up the themes that have subsequently become prominent in discussions of free trade and protection. Trade Policy and Economic Welfare expounds the normative theory of trade policy. It includes discussion of static and dynamic arguments for protection; effects of trade policy on income distribution, monopoly, X-efficieny, foreign investment and capital accumulation; protection of advanced-technology industries; the choice between tariffs and subsidies as methods of protection. The chapters are self-contained to allow flexible use of the book in teaching undergraduate courses on international trade and the economics of developing countries.
